Keira Walsh could make her Women’s World Cup return in England’s last-16 tie with Nigeria on Monday, according to manager Sarina Wiegman.
The Barcelona Femení midfielder was stretchered off during England’s 1-0 win over Denmark on 28 July with a knee injury.
In positive news for Wiegman and her staff, Walsh returned to training with the squad at Central Coast Stadium on Sunday.
Wiegman gives Walsh update
“Keira’s doing well. She started her rehabilitation straight after we knew what was going on. She has been on the pitch training today and now we will wait to see how she recovers,” said Wiegman.
“If she does well, then she will be available for [Monday].”
Initial fears
Walsh’s knee injury was an initial cause for concern, however, scans later ruled out any anterior cruciate ligament damage.
“Everyone was in shock of course,” added Wiegman. “But then really quickly, the day after, we knew things weren’t as bad as it looked and that people had thought.”
