Kevin Mier made his ambitions clear on upon his arrival in Mexico where he was met by several Cruz Azul fans, all keen to get a first glimpse of the Colombian goalkeeper. The 23-year-old goalkeeper joins on a $3 million deal from Atlético Nacional, where he has spent the past five years.

Mier heads to the Liga MX for what will be his first experience outside of his homeland and is already up for big challenges that loom ahead, such winning the title with his new team - their first since 2021.

“I am thrilled that they have bet on me,” he told reporters. “They believe in my talent and what I can do”. Nacional have retained a percentage of any future fee if Mier is sold on. All that remains now is for the goalkeeper to be officially presented by his new club.

“For me it is a great challenge, it’s a real a joy to belong to this club. I obviously have set myself goals and we have to work to achieve them -first, to contribute with my team mates. I want to win the tenth title as well which is something that the club wants and is very important. We’ll have to work very hard for it,” the Colombia international added.

Nacional and Cruz Azul, clubs with “hierarchy”

Mier, who has since bid Nacional farewell with a short video message, continued: “I come from Colombia, from Atlético Nacional - a great club where you have to win no matter what. They have high standards and here will be the same - probably even harder. But I know that by doing everything the right way and working hard, it can be achieved”.

The Colombian joins a growing list of reinforcements for 2024. So far, the arrival of the Argentine Gonzalo Piovi has been made official - other arrivals including Camilo Cándido, Gabriel Fernández and Lorenzo Faravelli are expected to be formally announced in due course.
