There is just one matchday remaining in the regular season phase of the Clausura 2023 season. After the competition kicked-off last January, this forthcoming month of May will kick-off with the round of repechaje ahead of the final playoff games all leading to the grand final at the end of the month where the Liga MX Clausura 2023 champions will be crowned.

This is set to be the final short season with the ‘repechaje’ system where the top 12 teams (out of a league composed of 18 clubs) advance to the postseason and incredibly the team that finishes 12th in the league, could feasibly be crowned champions.

Securing a top four position is key for clubs at the top of the table as it means avoiding the potential banana skin that is a game in the repechaje/play-in where in 90 minutes, the season could grind to a halt following an adverse result.

Clausura 2023: Top Four

We know the names of three of the four teams that have secured a playoff place with one game remaining and after this weekend’s games, table toppers Rayados, Club America and Chivas have punched their tickets for an automatic playoff place. The final spot will be a battle between Toluca (currently in fourth) and 2022 Apertura champions Pachuca with the Red Devils holding a one point advantage over Los Tuzos.

What is the Repechaje?

Teams that fail to secure a top four place but do secure a top 12 ranking in the overall table (with the exception of Queretaro, ineligible to secure a place in the repechaje due to their overall coefficient ranking) advance to a repechaje or play-in round where 5th plays 12th, 6th vs 11th, 7th vs 10th and 8th vs 9th. These are one legged games with the winners advancing to face the teams who ended in the top four.

The competition is then staged on a two legged basis with the top placed teams playing their second game at home in the quarter, semi and final stages.
