Klopp: “A lot to take from” Liverpool’s loss to City

Though Jurgen Klopp’s side was defeated 3-2 at Manchester City, he points out the bad and good points and how they can improve.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed Manchester City as “probably the best team in the world” after their 3-2 defeat in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at Etihad Stadium on Thursday. Liverpool has won just one of its last eight away games against City in all competitions, losing four.

Klopp reflects on critical moments

A defeat is obviously not the goal, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good game that can be learned from. That’s how Klopp thinks about it.

“There’s a lot to take from it,” said Klopp. “The result, obviously not, and the goals we conceded, not. But in between, yes.”

City had the lead on two different occasions with goals by Erling Haaland and Riyad Mahrez, both of which were met by goals by Liverpool - Fabio Carvalho and Mohamed Salah. But it was Nathan Ake who scored the third and final goal for City to put them in the lead again, which they held onto until the end, sending them into the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup.

“We had our moments. We could have scored more goals, they had more chances,” said Klopp. “Spectacular game, I would say, for that early stage again. High-intensity.”

Liverpool will face Aston Villa next and they need to figure out how to get control of the game. Klopp attributed their struggles in part to City being one of the best teams out there, but if it’s more than that, then Liverpool has work to do.

“[Manchester City] are unbelievable how they are and what they do,” Klopp said. “So it’s normal that you struggle in moments, so I accept that. That’s why, especially in the big difficulties I will not count too much now because we will not play every three days against Man City. But we can do better, and we will work on that and then let’s make sure we’re ready for Aston Villa.
