Kylian Mbappé could sign new PSG contract to avoid free transfer

The France captain has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid next summer, but a new deal would force his next club to pay a hefty transfer fee.

A deal has reportedly been struck between Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain that will see the 24-year-old forward sign a new deal with the club.

The contract extension would ensure that PSG do not lose Mbappé on a free next summer, while giving the player assurances that he will be allowed to leave if a transfer fee is paid.

The Times reports that Mbappé and PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi have struck a deal that provides a “guaranteed sale clause” in return for signing an extension.

Mbappé had been at war with the club in recent months over his desire to leave on a free transfer next summer. PSG insisted that they would not allow that to happen and began looking for buyers for Mbappé, going so far as to exclude him from the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea.

Mbappé, who is currently club captain, returned to the fold for the French champions in time to play in their Ligue 1 opener against Toulouse on Saturday. He scored the opener from the penalty spot but PSG could only manage a 1-1 draw in their first league game under new boss Luis Enrique.

How much would Kylian Mbappé cost?

Full details of the proposed deal have not been made public but it is thought that PSG will hope to extract a significant proportion of the €180 million paid to bring Mbappé to the club in 2017.

Earlier this summer the club accepted an offer of €300 million from Al-Hilal, but Mbappé refused to enter into contract talks with the Saudi Pro League side.

In 2021 it was reported that Real Madrid, still seen as Mbappé's most likely final destination, had tabled a bid of €200 million to prise him from PSG. It remains to be seen if Los Blancos will be willing to make another offer of that size in 2024.

Will Kylian Mbappé leave PSG this summer?

With the player now welcomed back into the PSG squad, it looks like the Mbappé transfer saga has been put on hold for another summer. After he ruled out a move to the Saudi Pro League last month it seems unlikely that anyone will be able to stump up the huge fee that would be required.

For now, PSG are preparing for one more season of Mbappé in which to finally win the Champions League. Ahead of the first round of Ligue 1 fixtures Luis Enrique said he was delighted to have Mbappé to call upon.

“I am very happy to have a world-class player like Kylian,” the PSG boss said on Friday. “He is in great shape, he has a lot of desire, a very good state of mind.”
