Kylian Mbappé faces harsh penalty truth after more Real Madrid woes
The French star has not yet found his best form in LaLiga and on Wednesday he failed again from the penalty spot.
Kylian Mbappé, the most talked-about summer transfer ahead of the 2024-25 season, is somewhat short of his best days as a Real Madrid player. After missing a crucial penalty against Liverpool in last week’s UEFA Champions League match, he repeated the mistake against Athletic Club Bilbao in LaLiga EA Sports’ 16th round this Wednesday.
Penalty record for Mbappé
The 25-year-old forward has underperformed in some key matches under Carlo Ancelotti’s leadership. However, his penalty woes in 2024 trace back to his time in France. According to MisterChip, Mbappé has missed four penalties this year—two with PSG and now two with Madrid. This marks the first time in his professional career that he has missed four penalties in a single calendar year and the first instance of missing two penalties within the same week.
OptaJose adds to the concern, noting that Mbappé has missed two out of five penalties for Real Madrid across all competitions, including the UEFA Super Cup, LaLiga, and the UEFA Champions League. This makes him the highest-tier Spanish player to waste the most penalty attempts this season.
Furthermore, StatMuse records reveal that Mbappé has squandered 13 significant scoring opportunities in LaLiga EA Sports, surpassing any other player who hasn’t missed more than 10. His missed penalty this Wednesday at San Mamés also ended his perfect conversion rate from the spot in Spain, dropping from 3-for-3 to 3-for-4. Will he be handed the ball next time?
