Kylian Mbappé, France’s next captain?
Mbappé could assume the captaincy of the France team when Hugo Lloris retires.
Kylian Mbappé, in the midst of the disappointment of the World Cup, celebrated his 24th birthday on Tuesday. He is France’s second-highest goalscorer at World Cups, the second-highest goalscorer in PSG’s history, the sixth in the French national team and the top scorer in World Cup finals could take over the captaincy of the national team from March, in the event of Hugo Lloris’ international retirement.
According to L’Équipe, Lloris, who is the most capped French goalkeeper with 145 caps, is considering leaving the French national team after the World Cup, a decision that would benefit Mbappé, who has shown leadership at the World Cup and led his side to a second successive final. He scored a hat-trick in the final but ended up on the losing side in Qatar.
Mbappé ready to break records
In 66 games for Les Bleus, Mbappé's numbers are staggering. He has 36 goals, is the sixth-highest scorer for France, has registered 20 assists and his 12 goals in two World Cups put him one behind the French record held by Just Fontaine. If he takes on the captaincy, as he has already done twice at PSG, his status will continue to grow.
