Kylian Mbappé: “Playing for Real Madrid is like a gift from God”
Mbappé shares what makes Real Madrid special, how he has matured, and the ambition driving him toward the next World Cup.
Kylian Mbappé has long been a leader, both on and off the field. The French superstar does not just let his game and goal-scoring do the talking. He has also become one of soccer’s most authoritative voices in the public sphere.
In an interview with GQ, Real Madrid’s No. 10 opened up about what it means to wear the famous white jersey, how his game has evolved, and what drives him ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
A dream realized at Real Madrid
“For me, playing for Real Madrid is like a gift from God,” Mbappé said. “To have the opportunity to live from my passion, to play in the biggest games, to be at the best club in the world.”
He added that gratitude remains central to his mindset.
“I’m always thankful to be on the field, to wake up every morning and do what makes me happy.”
The Bernabéu experience
Playing at the Santiago Bernabéu continues to be a defining part of that experience.
“I love being on the field and feeling like I’m stepping onto the best ground in the world, in a country that, from a soccer perspective, is one of the best there is,” he said.
Growth beyond raw talent
Mbappé also reflected on how his understanding of the game has matured over time.
“There’s no doubt it has evolved,” he explained. “When you start out, you play with a lot of freedom. You mainly think about expressing yourself and making the difference.”
That mindset, he says, changes with experience.
“Over time, you realize soccer is not just what you do with the ball. It’s everything around it: the team, consistency, responsibility. Today, talent is not enough. What really makes the difference is consistency.”
Eyes on the 2026 World Cup
Looking ahead, Mbappé made clear that the World Cup remains the ultimate stage.
“A World Cup is a special moment,” he said. “You win it together, through consistency and mentality. We have a lot of ambition, but also the humility to know that nothing is guaranteed.”
The challenge of staying at the top
For Mbappé, reaching the summit is only part of the journey. Staying there is the real test.
“The hardest thing is not getting there. It’s staying there and continuing to improve,” he said. “A career never unfolds exactly how you imagine it. There are things you control and others you don’t.”
Still, he recognizes how far he has come.
“Today I’m in the environment I dreamed of as a child, because I’ve always tried to give myself the means to get there, through hard work, discipline and high standards.”
