Hosts LA Galaxy had hoped to get their season off to a good start with a positive result against their neighbours. Greg Vanney’s side, who last lifted the trophy back in 2014, featured in the playoffs last season after finishing fourth in the Western Conference with 50 points. They made it as far as the semi-finals, only to be knocked out by LAFC, losing 3-2 with Cristian Arango scoring in injury time.

LAFC finished top of the Western Conference last season with 67 points, 11 more than second-placed Austin FC, after recording 21 wins in 34 games. After eliminating the Galaxy in the semis, Steve Cherundolo’s side breezed past Austin to book their place in the final against Philadelphia Union. The game was decided from the penalty spot after ending 3-3 after extra-time, LAFC prevailing 3-0 in the shootout.
