Expectation is on the rise in Los Angeles for Gareth Bale’s imminent arrival. The Welsh forward is expected to sign for LAFC as a free agent, once his contract with Real Madrid expires in just a few days’ time. The timing couldn’t be much better - if the deal goes through as planned, he could make his debut in the LA derby, El Tráfico  against LA Galaxy on 8 July - little over a week before his 33rd birthday.

This will be the 16th time the two LA clubs have met since the first meeting in 2018 - the 14th in the regular season. The Galaxy have the edge in the head-to-head figures having won seven of those previous meetings, LAFC have won three, including the most recent meeting in April, while five games have ended level.

Greg Vanney’s team finished eighth in the Western Conference last year on 48 points, failing to make the playoffs. LAFC ended just below them in ninth.

If he plays, Bale could find himself up against one of his old team mates. Chicharito spent a season on loan at Real Madrid in 2014-15 although they were hardly ever both included in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting line-up and were rarely on the pitch together. Chicharito is Galaxy’s top scorer so far this season with six goals - the same as LAFC’s Carlos Vela.

LAFC currently top the Western Conference on 30 points, one point ahead of Real Salt Lake but with two games in hand.
