LAFC’s David Martinez sets sights on World Cup glory with the ‘Vinotinto’
The 18-year-old LAFC striker spoke to AS about his MLS adaptation process and his goals for the future.
David Martínez has already created history in his first year with LAFC in Major League Soccer. The Venezuelan became the first player 18 years old or younger to record at least five goal contributions in a single campaign in the history of the Los Angeles franchise.
His solid performances this season have propelled the ‘Black & Gold’ into a Conference semi-final as they face Seattle Sounders this weekend with his displays also leading to him being called up to the Venezuelan national team led by Fernando Bautista.
The native of El Tigre, Venezuela, spoke with AS about his adaptation to a new country and a new league as well as sharing his short- and long-term goals as he dreams of representing his country at the 2026 World Cup.
How has your adaptation been in the US and with LAFC?
“The truth is that it hasn’t been easy because going to another country at my age and being alone, with the change of language, isn’t easy, but little by little I’ve been coping and adapting. The hardest thing is being away from your family, but perhaps the easiest thing is being able to play football. I feel like I do it naturally and the club has helped me a lot so that I feel comfortable and don’t have problems on the field.”
On the regular season with LAFC
“It wasn’t easy, to be honest, because of my adaptation and the injury I had. I didn’t miss many games, but right now I feel 100 percent. If the coach needs me, I’ll be there and I’ll try to do it in the best”.
How do you feel about the level of MLS?
“It’s a good league for young players like me, because it’s very physical, fast, you always have to be alert, think before you have the ball and be very smart when playing if you don’t have a very strong physique, as is my case”.
On facing Seattle in the Western Conference Semifinals
“It will be a great match. We have worked all season for this moment and we know that we are in good shape. We have the necessary squad to face the best and confidence levels are high too”.
How did you enjoy your debut with Venezuela?
“I think it’s something unique because I feel like any player would love to represent their country, to put on their jersey and be able to play. I was able to do it and at such a young age it makes me and my family very happy. It will be a memory that I will never be able to forget and I hope to play with the first team again soon.”
“There were no talks about this last call-up, but I am working with the U-20s because we know that next year is the South American championship for the category and it is very important for us to be able to qualify for a World Cup again. So I am very happy and very eager to be able to represent the Venezuelan national team again.”
On his dream of playing in the 2026 World Cup
“I think it’s a unique opportunity for us. I hope we can get the results because for Venezuela it’s a dream to go to a World Cup and being able to represent your country is something incredible. I think each of the players and the whole country wants that, so let’s hope things work out and we can play in a World Cup.”
Moving to play in Europe
“I would love to make history at LAFC and at some point play in Europe and be able to represent my country and be involved in a World Cup. I am very interested in the Spanish league,” concluded Martínez.
