Do we have a break for Christmas?

What do you think? Of course we do!

Well, sort of.

A mini-retirement, if you will.

It starts on Thursday 21 December and runs through to Tuesday 2 January, so I suppose you could call it a Christmas holiday, even if it's not for very long.

When is Barça's first game at Montjuic?

Barça are away to Getafe on the opening day and will have to wait until the second match day of the season to get their boots stuck into the new pitch at Montjuic.

They will take on Cádiz in their first home game at their temporary stadium on the weekend of 20 August (subject to change).

After that, they have the tough ties of Villarreal and Osasuna away from home, before Betis travel to Barcelona in game week 5 of the 23/24 season.

So, our final number is 44111

Now it's time to see which calendar out of the 99,999 comes out

as.com

César Soto Grado says:

We don't get much rest, we are starting pre-season now.

We always focus on these fixtures, it's good to have them so early.

There are special games for referees, the first games of the season are always great.

César Soto Grado, LaLiga referee

And the final number is...

César chooses a number 1!

44111 is our final number.

as.com

César Soto Grado is here

He's a LaLiga referee and has overseen 80 games in the top division.

as.com

Mijatovic chooses...

A number 1!

That means our number train is currently at: 4411

as.com

Mijatovic speaks ahead of the draw:

We won the league with Real Madrid in my first season with them, then we won the Champions League.

Spanish football is the best football for me.

Predrag Mijatovic, Former Real Madrid player

LaLiga is the most important and attractive league.

If we do a survey with all the best players in Europe, I'd say 80% want to play here

Predrag Mijatovic, Former Real Madrid player

Belonging to the world of football is beautiful, but the best thing is being a player. There is no better job.

Predrag MIjatovic, Former Real Madrid player

441__ so far...

We've got two more to go - and Mijatovic is on the stage!

as.com

Miguel Torres gives the balls a good wiggle and pulls out a...

as.com

Miguel Torres:

I think it's a very difficult league, and it's a very high level. It is competitive until the end.

The fans of LaLiga know a lot about football.

Miguel Torres, Former Getafe and Real Madrid player

Miguel Torres is next!

He played 224 games in LaLiga, including 52 for Real Madrid, where he won 2 leagues.

as.com

Paulo, after a long swirl of the balls, draws out another 4.

He also dropped it. A great show all round.

as.com

Paulo Futre:

Atlético are going to fight for everything. Let's see if we are lucky enough to win the Champions League.

LaLiga is the best league in the world, it has improved a lot.

Paulo Futre, Former Atlético Madrid player

And here comes PauloFutre!

He won two Copas del Rey with Atlético Madrid in 1991 and 1992.

as.com

Iván Helguera will now choose the first of 5 balls, which will create a number that will select the specific fixture list.

The first number up is 4.

as.com

Iván Helguera:

It's complicated to win a league, but that's the beautiful thing.

The Premier League is widely seen, but LaLiga is the best in the world.

Iván Helguera, Former Real Madrid player

So, there are 99,999 possible fixtures calendars to choose from, and the draw will select one of them.

But first, we've got former Real Madrid player, IvánHelguera, here, who played 291 LaLiga games and won 3 titles.

as.com

The power of everyone. The power of our football, comes the official LaLiga message after a video of a very windy countryside.

We also get a nice look at the new logo, which everyone will like by the end of the season.

as.com

And we're underway with the presentation...

We've got a welcome from a man in a suit.

"It's a special tournament across 9 months and 38 match days", he says.

Now time for a nice video before we crack open the good stuff.

as.com

The trophy is here!

LaLiga have borrowed it from FC Barcelona (probably) for the event today, as I'm sure it's something Xavi keeps at the side of his bed.

as.com

Here we go!

The music has been turned up at Las Rozas training ground, and the fixtures are about to be revealed!

as.com

Osasuna are dreaming of Europe

The team from the El Sadar stadium won 15 league games last season, a number they have only reached once before in their history.

Their amazing campaign saw them clinch the final European place in LaLiga, as they hust about edged out Athletic Club and Mallorca as the season drew to a close.

as.com

The third promoted team is.... UD Las Palmas!

Yes, the islanders are back in LaLiga for the 23/24 season, and Alberto Moleiro is definitely a player to keep an eye on throughout the year.

The creative midfielder is only 19-years-old and has a huge future ahead of him in Spanish and European football.

He played a whopping 40 games last season all across the attacking midfield line of the team and managed 8 assists in the Second Division

as.com

Fifteen minutes to go!

Are you as excited as I am? I hope you are!

Twenty LaLiga teams are ready to move one step closer to the start of the upcoming 23/24 season, which begins on August 11, but you already knew that.

as.com
Who is Joselu, Real Madrid’s new striker?

One player who has made the leap to keep himself in LaLiga is Real Madrid's new number 9 - sorry, 14 - Joselu.

The forward moved from Espanyol who were relegated to the second tier, but Joselu himself had a staggeringly good season, scoring 19 goals and finishing the campaign as the top Spanish scorer in the division.

A return to Real Madrid was his dream move, and I promise I didn't post this article just so I could say Jose-who?

as.com

And as for Real Madrid...

They've just announced that their very own German midfielder, Toni Kroos, has extended his deal with the club for one more season.

Who knew? We all did.

El Gran Derbi, anyone?

Spain's got El Clásico and the Derbi Madrileño, but what about El Gran Derbi, between Sevilla and Real Betis?

It might be the game of the year with the noisiest atmosphere, but I'm not going to stick my hand in the fire and say who is actually the loudest of the two.

You can make up your own mind, dear reader. Whatever your decision, it's certainly one of Spain's most intense and fascinating games of the whole calendar, and I can't wait to see when it is so I can get my travel plans booked!

as.com

Let's go through those teams again: who do you want to play first?

Alavés
Almería
Athletic Club
Atlético Madrid
Barcelona
Cádiz
Celta Vigo
Getafe
Girona
Granada
Las Palmas
Osasuna
Rayo Vallecano
Real Betis
Real Mallorca
Real Madrid

Another ex-LaLiga star is returning!

José Callejón may not be a spring chicken anymore, but his explosion through the ranks of the Real Madrid academy was one we all remember and is now the creative hub of Granada, who managed to get up to the first division once again.

The Andalucían team have one of the most picturesque grounds in Spain (and possibly the whole of Europe), with the views towards the Sierra Nevada mountain range clear to see on a bright day

Their fans make a decent noise as well and they are a much-welcomed addition to the 23/24 season of LaLiga!

as.com

Javier Tebas on the fixtures:

The main objective of having an asymmetrical calendar is to be able to comply with a series of security conditions, as well as those of the European competitions, the clubs and their building works, festivities etc. It also maximises TV audience.

Javier Tebas, Head of LaLiga

Following these conditioning factors you get 99,999 different calendars and the draw chooses one of them.

Javier Tebas, Head of LaLiga
Vini Jr 22/23

Vini Jr set to shine once again

The Brazilian winger had a simply stunning season for Los Blancos and will be looking to continue his fantastic form in the upcoming campaign.

23 goals and 18 assists is not a bad return for the player who will now need to focus on replacing Karim Benzema's numbers, as the hugely important Frenchman is no longer a player in the Spanish capital.

as.com
Will Man City’s Gündogan join Barcelona? LaLiga giants optimistic

2022/23 LaLiga champions FC Barcelona look set to sign Manchester City's midfield metronome, Ilkay Gündogan

The German was at the heart of everything City did well last season, a campaign in which they picked up a few trophies along the way.

A midfield trio of Pedri, De Jong and Gündogan is quite a tasty treat for us LaLiga fans who watch every game, every week.

Deportivo Alavés return to the Primera División

The team from northern Spain are back in the top division after coming through via the dramatic play-off route.

They came 4th in the Second Division (finishing the season just 4 points off the top) and beat Eibar in the semi-final of the play-off over two legs.

After that they took on Levante, who were going through after 120 minutes... until Alavés got a 129th minute penalty, which Asier Villalibre scored to send them up!

LaLiga logo

LaLiga has a new image...

You may have noticed that the famous spinning wheel logo of LaLiga is no more, with those at the top deciding to go down a more simplified route, a bit like what happened with the Spanish Federation, who also changed their logo to a more online-friendly one

Whatever your opinion is on the logo switch, it's definitely a bold move for the league and we will find out what the sponsor of the competition is going to be on July 3.

as.com

Guess who's still here!

Another team we'll be seeing in LaLiga is Valencia, who avoided the drop by the skin of their teeth with some fantastic performances from the young players in the side, who will surely be looking to make even more of an impact on the league next season!

as.com

Happy birthday to Mikel Merino!

The Real Sociedad midfielder helped his side reach 4th place with 21 wins out of 38 games, pipping Villarreal and Real Betis to that crucial Champions League spot in the table.

FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are the other teams who made up the rest of the top spots.

When does the football season begin?

The season starts on Friday August 11 and finishes on Sunday June 2. We will have 38 fixtures for each team announced and this time we won't have a great big World Cup in the middle to make everything seem 100 times longer!

The schedule for the season is not a mirrored one like it used to be: before the 2019/20 season, every team was guaranteed to play against each other in the first half of the season, with a mirrored version of the calendar in the second half, post Christmas.

That's not the case anymore, meaning we get a big heap of random fixtures to feed on throughout the campaign.

The fixtures are being revealed surprisingly early this season, and the event will be held in the Luis Aragonés suite of the Las Rozas training base in north-west Madrid

The complex has everything you could need to make your footballing life as comfortable as possible, including accommodation, training pitches, state-of-the-art gym facilities and plenty of footballs.
