Lamine Yamal really wants this title
A great goal from Barcelona's number 10 sealed the match against Athletic Club.
The game against Athletic Club looked destined to be decided by the smallest of margins. Neither team was particularly sharp – Barcelona because of the effort expended in the Copa del Rey and Athletic because the Basque side has looked strangely off its usual level this season and also felt the strain of its cup tie against Real Sociedad. The contest remained finely balanced until the second half, when Lamine Yamal’s talent finally tipped the scales. His goal – the only one of the night – delivered three golden points and served as another reminder that Barcelona has a player capable of changing any game with a single moment.
The duel at San Mamés was evenly matched throughout, and it was only after the break that the Barcelona No. 10 stepped forward to settle it. Pedri’s introduction proved decisive as he provided the assist for the decisive goal. Yamal received the ball facing Adama, sat him down with a feint and curled a shot into the very top corner. It was a spectacular strike, the kind of finish that can define a night.
He now has nine goals in his last 11 games and 19 in total for Barcelona this season. The teenager is already the team’s top scorer, three ahead of Ferran Torres (16), and is chasing Kylian Mbappé and Vedat Muriqi – who have 23 and 18 goals respectively – in the race for the Pichichi. At just 18 years and 237 days old, Yamal has already scored 50 goals in professional competitions (44 for Barcelona and six for Spain). Lionel Messi, by comparison, did not reach that milestone until he was 20 years and 315 days old.
Yamal has no intention of letting this La Liga title slip away. After Real Madrid’s fortunate win over Celta, it was essential for Barcelona not to drop points against Athletic. San Mamés is never an easy place to play, and Barcelona were far from their best across the 90 minutes. But a single flash of genius from the Rocafonda prodigy proved enough. Yamal now heads into Tuesday’s clash at St. James’ Park against Newcastle ready for another test that could shape the team’s European campaign.
