Barcelona suffered heavily against Newcastle, arriving at St. James’ Park physically drained. The team had emptied the tank in the Copa del Rey return leg against Atlético Madrid and now appear to be running on fumes. Given the way the game unfolded, the draw in England felt almost like a victory for Hansi Flick’s side, who desperately need rest and time to recover.

The point came thanks to another goal from Lamine Yamal, who at this stage of the season has effectively carried the team’s scoring burden. With the two center forwards, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, along with Raphinha, struggling to find the net, the teenager has stepped forward to keep Barcelona afloat.

The Barça No. 10 has also begun to assert himself as a leader within the squad. His composure was evident when he demanded the ball to take the penalty awarded for a foul on Dani Olmo in the final minute of the game. It was a defining moment – and he did not miss. Just weeks earlier, on Feb. 16, he had failed from the spot against Girona, so the memory was still fresh. Against Newcastle, however, he converted with authority.

Yamal is still searching for his first victory in England – he did not play in the Champions League league-phase game at St. James’ Park and previously lost against Chelsea – but he left his mark with a goal that keeps Barcelona very much alive ahead of the second leg.

The strike took him to 20 goals this season. In six Champions League games he has already produced four goals and three assists. As Barcelona wait for their other forwards to rediscover their scoring touch, the team is clinging to the form of its teenage prodigy. Just last league round he rescued the side with a spectacular goal at San Mamés against Athletic Club, and the game before that he scored his first career hat trick against Villarreal.

For now, Barcelona’s hopes rest squarely on Lamine Yamal.
