Leeds United vs Manchester City: as it happened

Signing off...

OK, that's all from me tonight - thank you for joining me for tonight's game.

Leeds United 1-3 Manchester City

Joe

as.com

We had a complete game. [Leeds] have the highest intensity in the league.

It was tough, they were very narrow.

We deserved to be on top at half time.

Haaland is different class, world class. But he can improve in many things.

If Haaland only scores, that's enough for me!

Rodri, Manchester City

"Job done.

The second half was more difficult than the first.

The result is a big compliment for our side.

Everything we did was thanks to Rico Lewis and Rodri."

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager

"I have an idea of how many goals I want, but I can't say.

I could have scored 5. But we won. That's the most important thing.

I was mad I didn't play at the World Cup. I was a commentator at my home but nobody listened to me!

To watch other people score motivates me, triggers me.

It's special to play here. I'm happy today. It's a special moment for me. I had a jersey of Leeds in my room. It's my craziest fantasy to be here tonight.

I’m born here in Leeds. I have the upmost respect for the club. I had planned it beforehand not to celebrate goals."

Erling Haaland, Manchester City

More Haaland numbers?

Oh, go on then... we've got his post-match reaction coming up as well.

as.com

Which robot is he? Terminator? Cyberman?

Or all of them put together? Probably. Mixed with a Norse God. And a Leeds fan.

Full time!

FT: Leeds 1-3 Manchester City

In the end, Leeds huffed and puffed but City simply steamrollered them. Haaland was too much, as was De Bruyne, as was just about everybody else. City are now 5 points behind Arsenal, just as things were; Leeds are 2 off the drop.

Leeds will be happy with the performance for the most part, as they competed well with a lot of intensity, but City were simply playing at a different level.

The home side gave City a wobble towards the end but it was nothing serious and Pep's team had the game where they wanted it.

as.com
90+4

Leeds try some typical Marsch-ball, playing it directly up the middle of the pitch with short, sharp passes. It fails to work, however, and City recover possession.

as.com
90+2

Llorente, instead of clearing the ball in behind, decides to backheel it. No, me neither. He misses, obviously, and Haaland nearly smacks in the resulting shot. A crazy decision in a dangerous defensive moment.

as.com
90+1

Close! Akanji nearly scores an own goal from a Leeds cross but it goes out for a corner, which Ederson does well to catch.

GELHARDT SKIMS THE POST!!!

A great cutback finds the striker who spins a shot just wide!

as.com
77

HAALAND NEARLY GETS A HAT TRICK!

My, oh my, you'd have fancied Haaland all day! He finds space between the two centre backs and is played through, but a - wait for it - POOR finish sees Meslier save.

as.com
75

De Bruyne hits a low shot that's saved by Meslier.

GOAL FOR LEEDS!!!!!

1-3!

From a corner, it was a fantastic delivery from Greenwood to the head of Struijk, who fires a bullet past Ederson.

Not bad...

as.com

A slick counter attack from City. De Bruyne finds Haaland, who plays a one-two with Grealish. The finish is simple from the striker and that's the game. Another lovely goal from City, who have sliced through Leeds again.

as.com
64

THREE!

HAALAND MAKES IT THREE!

as.com
63

Greenwood stood over the ball on the edge of the box...

Into the wall.

as.com
62

Lewis booked for a challenge on Gnonto, who has been Leeds' most dangerous runner.

as.com
61

Poor Aaronson looks absolutely drained, like me after running for 5 minutes. Except he's done over an hour. In a professional football match.

as.com
60

HUGE CHANCE FOR CITY!

BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL!

Haaland acts as a wall, bouncing the ball towards Gundogan inside the Leeds box, but the German can't get a strong touch and put a shot wide.

as.com
58

Another life-saving challenge from Cooper on Gundogan, who was about to cause a lot of danger for City.

The Leeds press has caused problems for City in the past few minutes, perhaps the away side have taken their foot off the gas, which one would expect.

as.com
57

Forshaw steals the ball and works it forward, but Leeds hit a dead end.

as.com
55

Aaronson slips the ball through Rodri's legs on the edge of the box before skewing a frustrated shot high into the stands.

The crowd is going through their best moment right now, screaming and waving their scarves.

as.com
53

Leeds try to get back into the game with some quick passing of their own, but City press well. A long way back for the home team now, who have an impossible task.

as.com
as.com
52

HAALAND MAKES IT TWO

Grealish steals the ball from centre-back Robin Koch, who dilly dallies on the ball for too long. The forward breaks away before squaring to Haaland, who finishes with a tap in.

No celebration from the striker against his home city.

as.com
50

A fantastic tackle from Leeds captain, Liam Cooper, who makes a game-saving stop on Mahrez after the winger broke away down the right side.

as.com
49

Right back Rico Lewis is having a great game in the channel on the right side. He starts a move that ends in an Ake cross towards the Norwegian giant, but Meslier catches it.

as.com
47

Jesse Marsch with a few kick ups on the touchline. About as animated as he's been all day.

as.com
46

Leeds attack through Aaronson, who finds Rodrigo. The Spaniard plays it to Forshaw, but instead of putting a cross in, decides to play it short and City cut out.

as.com
46

Here we go again!

as.com

The teams are on their way out now...

as.com

Here are the stats for the game so far...

Look away, Leeds fans!

as.com

Rodri celebrates his goal against Leeds

Safe to say he enjoyed that one!

as.com
45+1

And that's it!

HT: Leeds 0-1 City

Leeds did so well to defend like they did, but City are relentless and their constant barrage was always going to cause trouble at some point. Rodri got a goal but it could have been more, especially for Haaland and Grealish. De Bruyne has also been excellent.

as.com
as.com

GOAL FOR CITY!

RODRI SCORES

Liquid football, what a great goal just before halftime. De Bruyne plays it to Rodri from the left, who continues the play to Mahrez. The shot is saved but the Spaniard taps in the rebound. A lovely goal.

as.com
45

HUGE CHANCE FOR GREALISH! HE CAN'T BELIEVE IT!

Rico Lewis fires in a cross for Grealish, who is on his own, 8 yards out. The ex-Villa man is unmarked and Meslier is off his line, but somehow he spins his shot over the bar! Incredible chance!

as.com
43

Fantastic football from City, working the ball from left to right.

Grealish puts in a cross over the top from the left side, but Mahrez can't find the space to get on the end of it.

as.com
42

Rodri fouls Aaronson after a nice touch from the American. Some good possession for Leeds...

as.com
40

Free kick for City on the right...

Something from the training ground: KDB slips a ball across the edge of the box, in front of the defence to Grealish, whose shot flies high and wide.

as.com
38

Gnonto runs at the City defence to the delight of the crowd, who had start to get itchy.

Unfortunately for them, the Italian's cross is poor and the away side recover the ball.

as.com
37

Forshaw spins 2 players excellently in the middle before slipping over; City counter but Grealish's shot is blocked.

as.com
34

Lewis does well to find Mahrez after initially losing the ball in the middle to Roca. Gundogan then gets on the end of the through pass but Meslier is there to clean up.

as.com
33

CHANCE!

Now it's time for Leeds! Gnonto does brilliantly, running straight at the defence and causing City all sorts of problems. Cleared for a throw.

as.com
32

GREALISH CLOSE!!

Leeds make a meal of a clearance and Mahrez clips the ball in, which spins all the way to the far post, but Grealish sends it over. Looks like he went with the wrong foot.

as.com
31

HUGE SAVE FROM MESLIER!!!

De Bruyne played an exquisite pass to Haaland, who got the better of centre-back Cooper. The striker got on the end of the ball and aimed low, but Meslier got out excellently to save the shot.

as.com
29

Kristensen blocks a shot from Grealish after City played through the lines well. The first time in a while Leeds have allowed them space to do so.

Corner for City, saved by Meslier.

as.com
28

Free kick for Leeds in the middle of the pitch met with ironic cheers from the crowd.

Roca will lump the ball into the box.

Cooper fouls Stones. The ball is back with City.

as.com
26

Leeds continue to defend in a very tight, compact block. Every time City try to work it down the wings, Leeds cover well.

It is very energy expensive method of play, however...

as.com
25

Leeds try to break, but Roca's pass can't quite find Aaronson. City back with the ball.

Grealish getting booed every time he touches the ball.

as.com
23

Back underway...

as.com
22

While Grealish is down injured (tick), Guardiola has a word with Akanji and Stones, his two centre-backs for the evening.

as.com

And it's close!

Meslier lets Gundogan's shot go out of play, but it was probably a bit closer than he anticipated after Mahrez the German the ball.

I suppose that's why they call Meslier the Iceman.

as.com
19

Free kick for City out on the right. Mahrez to take...

as.com
18

The Leeds crowd goes absolutely crazy as the home side press City and Rodri ends up all the way back next to Ederson. City forced to ping-pong the ball out of danger and into space.

as.com

Possession so far (%)

Leeds 28-72 M. City

as.com
16

CHANCE!

De Bruyne whips in a dangerous cross and Gundogan dives to meet it, but the ball flies past everyone. Big chance.

as.com
14

Leeds try to build up and some good possession ends when Marc Roca gets penalised for a supposed foul on Grealish, who fell over. Strike that off your bingo card.

as.com
13

Haaland almost latches onto a ball down the middle. He came again but there was just too much on the pass for the City striker.

as.com
11

City continue to hold the ball, Leeds continue to sit back and defend, looking for a moment to pounce.

There's a great battle between the fans, who are trying hard to out-sing each other. So far, it's 1-0 Leeds on that front.

as.com
10

It's an incredibly narrow 4-3-3 from Leeds, who are playing on the counter attack, as you would against these monsters.

City, on the other hand, are spreading their players out, making the pitch as huge as possible.

as.com
9

Leeds have been pushed right back here; City are pinging passes this way and that, with the white shirts chasing shadows.

as.com
8

Ederson runs way out of his goal to stop a potential Leeds chance...

as.com
6

SO CLOSE!!

Haaland opens the play to Mahrez, who plays to Lewis on the right. The youngster finds De Bruyne on the edge of the box and the Belgian screams a shot towards Meslier in the Leeds goal. Just wide.

as.com
6

Leeds pressing high, leaving lots of gaps in midfield for City to probe.

So far, the away team are happy to keep the ball and do exactly that.

as.com
5

Struijk plays the ball in towards Rodrigo inside the box, but the Spaniard chooses to leave it for Aaronson, who hadn't read the movement.

as.com
4

Haaland takes the ball down on his chest with ease, spins and fires a shot but luckily for Leeds, he fails to make any worthwhile contact with the ball.

as.com
2

City with all the ball so far, zipping it furiously it around Leeds' defensive structure...

as.com
1

HUGE CHANCE FOR HAALAND!

Ake lifts the ball over the top for Haaland, who hits the ball into Meslier's palm. It should be 0-1!

as.com
1

A minute of applause, the players take the knee and Haaland kick us off!

as.com

Erling Haaland holds back a smile as he lines up on the pitch.

Manchester City are in their red and black striped shirt, black shorts and black socks.

Leeds in their typical all white.

Leeds United vs Manchester City

I'm telling you, it's cold! Everyone is buying gloves, scarves and hats before the game!

as.com

It's going to be a special atmosphere here tonight...

The Leeds United players have just come out to warm up to a huge cheer from the crowd. Elland Road is filling up nicely now in time for kick-off.

as.com

"Leeds are an intense team, a top team.

I slept well last night.

There are stadiums that are more special than others. This is one of them. We will have to suffer.

We don't have time. We have to get a result. Small margins make the difference

We want to be at the top as much as possible."

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager

"It's really important to get the lead and then remain aggressive.

We've talked a lot about Haaland and what movements he likes to make. It's a big task to control him.

We need to fight for everything, to bring our crowd into the match.

Haaland has such good instincts. He is so powerful."

Jesse Marsch, Leeds United manager

Leeds United starting XI:

Summerville, the young winger, drops out. Meslier (GK) is fit to start.

Rodrigo Moreno starts, he has 9 goals this season.

USA star Aaronson is also in the XI.

as.com

Team news in!

It's an immensely strong XI from City: man mountain Haaland starts, as does De Bruyne. Phillips is on the bench.

Manchester City injury update: manager Pep Guardiola calls Kalvin Phillips “overweight”

It has not been smooth sailing for Manchester City in the buildup to the game, with manager Pep Guardiola calling Kalvin Phillips overweight and as such, has left him out of the squad for today's game. No return to Elland Road for the former Leeds man.

Haaland returns home!

Erling Haaland was born in Leeds and multiple reports support the suggestion that he supports the club, reportedly asking for tickets to a game as a birthday present before he moved to Borussia Dortmund.

"Haaland text me when the fixtures were announced. He has Leeds in his heart", said Jesse Marsch in the buildup to the game.

USA-inspired heroes at Leeds

Tyler Adams is missing for Leeds due to picking up a second yellow against Spurs before the break for the World Cup. He has been a revelation for Jesse Marsch's side so far this year, making himself a firm fan favourite due to his tough tackling skills and confident, assured presence off the pitch.

as.com

How things look for both sides:

Manchester City are on the hunt, because they have to be. Arsenal and Newcastle both won convincingly over the past few days which has obligated Pep Guardiola's men to put Leeds to the sword or risk their title challenge slipping away.

Leeds will be on damage limitation from the beginning, one might think, as they have had trouble at the back all season; it is going to have to be a perfect performance if they are to get anything at all from the game and the fans will also have to play their part, which they usually do.

as.com

Elland Road is looking good tonight!

As I say, the temperatures are currently at Nordic levels. Bring your gloves.

as.com

Team news: Manchester City

Ruben Dias is out with an injury.

Haaland was a doubt but should be OK to play.

Kalvin Phillips is not available due to being "overweight", as Pep Guardiola said in the week.

as.com

Team news: Leeds United

As I say, the temperature is not the warmest in Yorkshire, but hopefully that won't stop an intriguing affair from living up to its expectations.

Tyler Adams is suspended and will not feature; Luis Sinisterra who is injured, along with long-term absentee, Stuart Dallas.

Goalkeeper Meslier is a doubt, although Marsch said during the week that he is "confident" that the three mentioned players will be the only ones missing for the Whites.
