The midfielder picked up an injury in his side’s defeat to Belgium and is now a doubt for the visit of Borussia Dortmund this weekend.

Germany and Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka was substituted during the first half of his nation’s friendly against Belgium on Tuesday after appearing to pick up an injury.

Goretzka was forced to leave the pitch after just half an hour and was pictured with heavy bandaging around his ankle. He initially signalled that he wanted to try to continue but he was swiftly substituted by German coach Hansi Flick.

The injury did not appear to be serious but even a brief spell on the sidelines could be significant for Bayern. Last week they parted company with former head coach Julian Nagelsmann ahead of crucial league and Champions League fixtures.

Will Goretzka be fit for Bayern vs City?

Despite his premature substitution on Tuesday, early signs suggest that the decision was mainly precautionary. He was able to walk off the pitch with minimal assistance and has two weeks until the first leg of the crucial clash with former Bayern coach Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

More in doubt, however, is his availability for this weekend’s league fixture against Borussia Dortmund. Bayern need a win against their Bundesliga rivals to regain top spot in the league, knowing that a defeat could be catastrophic for their title ambitions.

Will Jamal Musiala be fit for games against Dortmund and Manchester City?

Goretzka’s injury comes just a week after it was announced that fellow Bayern midfielder Jamal Musiala had also picked up a knock. The youngster was ruled out of the Germany squad for this international break due to a hamstring injury.

The 20-year-old is thought to have returned to light training and the club are eager to get him fit for the upcoming fixtures if possible. However a decision on Musiala’s availability will likely be made shortly before the game to give him the best chance of returning to the squad against Dortmund.
