L’Équipe: Mbappé ruling out renewal clause activation
The French outlet claim that the striker has no intention of executing a clause that would see him renew his PSG contract through to 2025.
Kylian Mbappé is once again reconsidering his future in Paris. According to the latest information from L’Équipe, the striker currently has no intention of staying at PSG through to 2025 and may look to a get-out clause signed the day his contract extension was confirmed. Last May, PSG confirmed that Mbappé had penned a deal though to 2025.
The striker at the time claimed: “I am also very happy to be able to continue playing in France, the country where I was born, grew up and flourished.”
The 2022 May extension signed by the French forward, which saw off interest from Real Madrid – runs until 2024 with an option for an additional year, as opposed to what was announced as a three-year extension at the time. The activation of this clause however has a deadline and Mbappé must activate it before 31 July (2023).
“The scenario is different,” says L’Équipe, which stresses that in autumn the player was making exit overtures to the PSG board although the tension between the two parties has calmed down.
Mbappé's expected decision to execute the additional year clause and leave in 2024 could lead to enormous pressure for his club PSG who pulled out all the stops in getting the player to stay at Parc des Princes last year with French head of state Emmanuel Macron getting involved in his continuity in Paris.
According to L’Équipe, PSG remain confident that Mbappé will stay through to 2025. The club is aware that it has hugely underperformed in the first year of the striker’s new contract but plans are afoot to give sporting director Luis Campos more freedom in the forthcoming summer transfer market.
