Liga MX Apertura top scorers standings after Matchday 12

After a dozen games, the Mexican league pauses for the FIFA international break, and we look at how the race for top goalscorer is shaping up.

Ciudad de México

Twelve matchdays of the Apertura 2023 have passed, and both the overall standings and the goal-scoring charts have seen significant movement. Surprising results and players who are beginning to shine and vie for the top individual accolade have made the competition in both categories increasingly intense.

With impressive performances from players like Carlos González, who scored against San Luis, César ‘Chino’ Huerta, who netted a brace against Cruz Azul, and Diego Valdés, who returned to action with a goal against Mazatlán, here’s how the Liga MX goal-scoring table stands at the moment.

Who is top scorer in Liga MX Apertura 2023?

1. Carlos González (Tijuana) - 8

2. Harold Preciado (Santos) - 8

3. Ángel Sepúlveda (Cruz Azul) - 7

4. César Huerta (Pumas) - 7

5. André Pierre Gignac (Tigers) - 7

6. Diego Valdés (America) - 6

7. Juan Ignacio Dinenno (Pumas) - 5

8. Guillermo Martínez (Puebla) - 5

9. Avilés Hurtado (FC Juárez) - 5

10. Julián Quiñones (America) - 5

Two Mexicans in top 10 Apertura scorers

It’s worth noting that both Pumas (Huerta and Dinenno) and América (Valdés and Quiñones) currently have two players each among the top 10 goalscorers in the tournament. Additionally, ‘Chino’ and ‘Cuate’ are the only Mexican players in the top five positions of the list.

The Apertura 2023 action will resume on Friday 20 October following the international break. And the return of the league promises to be full of goals, with fixtures like América vs Santos (featuring Preciado, Quiñones, and Valdés) and Cruz Azul vs Tigres (with Sepúlveda and Gignac).

Chivas and Monterrey are still absent from the top goalscorers’ list, but will have players keen to put that right.
