LIGA MX
Liga MX no longer most watched in the United States
According to the latest report, Mexican fans in the United States have lost their taste for the Aztec tournament.
Despite the presence of over 12 million natives in the United States, who for a long time favoured Mexican soccer as their preferred sports viewing choice, a shift in viewership habits has been observed. According to a recent analysis by World Soccer Talk, a specialized site in viewing figures on television and online, Liga MX has lost its prime spot in the entertainment preferences of fans living in the US.
English Premier League dominates in US
The website that has been providing television schedules, OTT news, and broadcaster interviews for 18 years, reported a change in how soccer is viewed globally at the start of the year. While previously fans were keen on watching classic matches like Chivas vs América, they now seem to prioritize Premier League or Bundesliga games.
The report indicates that while Liga MX previously held the preference in both Mexico and the United States, the Mexican league’s focus on commercial and monetary aspects over the sport has gradually altered fan perception. WST highlighted that Mexican soccer was once the audience leader in the US, despite MLS’s efforts to attract big names like Lionel Messi to boost the league’s growth, as viewers still preferred the Mexican product on their TVs.
However, in 2023 an unexpected phenomenon occurred. Fans showed a greater inclination towards the Premier League, both on open and subscription television and digital platforms. The high-profiled Apertura 2023 final between América and Tigres had the same number of viewers as the English Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool. Each event attracted 2.21 million viewers.
The report’s concern lies in the fact that the Liga MX match was a grand final featuring a popular team like América, whereas the Premier League match was a regular season game. Let’s see how things move in the coming year.
