Puebla vs América: match preview

After beating Chivas on penalties in the preliminary round of the Liga MX Apertura 2022 playoffs, Puebla now come up against regular-season champions América, in a quarter-final tie whose winners will face either Pachuca or Tigres in the last four.

América, who are 13-time Mexican champions, beat Puebla on the final matchday of the league phase earlier this month - and have not lost any of their last 11 meetings with La Franja.

However, Las Águilas must contend with the ‘curse of the superlíder’: only eight times in the Mexican league’s short-tournament era have the winners of the regular season gone on to victory in the playoffs.

After Wednesday’s first leg, América host Puebla in the return leg at the Estadio Azteca on Saturday.
