Lionel Messi makes history in France
The Argentine became the first player in Ligue 1 history to complete a hat-trick of assists in two games in the same season.
After a challenging start to the season at PSG and the multiple trips to South America for Argentina’s qualifiers, Lionel Messi is having a below-par end to the season by his standards. His three assists against Clermont on Saturday did however help him break a record never seen previously in Ligue 1.
Messi makes more history
Messi became the first player in the history of the French league to provide three assists in two games. The first time he did it was on 28 November 2021 against Saint-Étienne and the second was on Saturday 9 April in PSG’s 6-1 win against Clermont.
Mbappé top for assists
With his three assists against Clermont, Messi is second only to Mbappé for assists. The former Barcelona man has 13, Mbappé has 14. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has one year left on his contract in Paris, is becoming increasingly comfortable at the French club.
