Lionel Messi’s Argentina shirts sell for millions in New York
The auction of the six shirts that the Argentina star wore during the World Cup in Qatar were sold by the auction house Sotheby’s.
Six of Lionel Messi’s jerseys worn during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar have been sold by Sotheby’s auction house in New York. The auction, which lasted over a month, sought the highest bidder for these historic items worn by the world champion with the Argentine national team. And he hasn’t chopped them into pieces unlike others!
The sale of the six jerseys closed at 7.8 million dollars, a figure that came close to breaking the record for a sports clothing memorabilia auction. Initially, it was mentioned that Messi’s six shirts could reach a combined total of 10 million dollars. However, the bids did not reach this number, leaving the record intact for Michael Jordan’s NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1 million.
But which six Messi jerseys were auctioned?
According to information from EFE, the six jerseys included in this auction lot were those Messi wore during the group stage, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the first half of the final against France at Lusail Stadium.
Notably, the only jersey not included in this auctioned package was the one Messi wore when lifting the World Cup after defeating France. Maybe he’s keeping that for when his fortune drops!
It was also announced that the $7.8 million raised from the auction will be donated to the Sant Joan de Déu pediatric hospital in Barcelona as part of a charitable action.
