Update:

Alexander Isak has returned to Liverpool training, marking the end of a prolonged spell on the sidelines following an ankle injury and fibula fracture sustained back in a December game against Tottenham Hotspur.

His return to the training pitch is a significant step forward in his recovery and a welcome boost for the club, who have struggled in his absence.

Liverpool sit in 5th place in the Premier League at the time of writing, and have failed to find consistency all season. As such, manager Arne Slot has come under mounting pressure from fans to put together a string of positive results on the pitch - Isak’s return will only make things easier for everyone involved.

“To have him again in a team that’s usually generating quite a lot chances — and maybe not immediately from the first moment that he can start — but to have him back for the last two months is, I think, very helpful for us,” Slot admitted to club media on Wednesday.

“If you’ve worked so hard for three, four months or something like that and then to return to team training, that’s for everyone very nice. So Alex is, in that sense, in a good place."

“We’ve signed an incredible striker”

The timing of his return is hugely relevant: Liverpool take on Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend before coming up against UEFA Champions League holders PSG in the same round of the European competition.

After a drawn-out period of negotiations that lasted all summer, Isak joined Liverpool at the start of the current season, moving from Newcastle in a deal worth $170 million.

“Of course it’s only his first session, after three or four months [out], with the team but it’s good to have him back because we all know who we signed and we’ve signed an incredible striker,” Slot added.

“So to have him again in a team that’s usually generating quite a lot of chances – and maybe not immediately from the first moment that he can start – but to have him back for the last two months is, I think, very helpful for us.”
