Liverpool are the latest team to show interest in Benfica forward Darwin Núñez and are reportedly prepared to pay a club record €100 million to sign the 22-year-old.

According to The Guardian and Fabrizio Romano, Benfica value Núñez at €100 million but Liverpool would be willing to pay €80 million plus €20 million in add-ons to sign the highly-rated striker.

Premier League side Manchester United are also interested in the Uruguayan, who is understood to be keen on a move to Anfield.

United have held talks with the player’s representatives about joining new manager Erik Ten Hag at the club.

Mané wants to leave Anfield

Liverpool are awaiting a decision from Portuguese giants Benfica and do not want to enter a bidding war as they line up potential replacements for Sadio Mané, who wants to join Bayern Munich.

Liverpool have rejected Bayern’s opening offer for the Senegal forward and want over €40 million from the Bundesliga side.

Mané has only 12 months remaining on his contract. Fellow strike partners Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are also entering the final year of their contracts.

Champions League football

Liverpool’s advantage over United is that they can offer Champions League football in the 2022-23 season. Núñez has impressed Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, scoring for Benfica in both Champions League quarter-final legs against Liverpool in April.

In 28 league appearances for Benfica in the 2021/22 campaign, Núñez led the line superbly well, scoring 26 times and registering four assists.
