What happened to Mbappé against Spain?

Kylian Mbappé arrived unstoppable and left completely out of sorts. He came into the semifinal with eight goals in six games, but in his seventh he was shut out. He had been flying all tournament, only to run into a defense that matched him stride for stride. Pedro Porro won virtually every duel they shared. Pau Cubarsí defended with the composure of a veteran well beyond his years. Aymeric Laporte, meanwhile, showed exactly why experience matters.

Every time Mbappé tried to hurt Spain, he found only frustration. It eventually boiled over, earning him a yellow card after a late challenge on Unai Simón. It was the picture of a player who had dominated the World Cup from start to finish... until Wednesday night.

His best opportunity, although it never became a real chance, came in the 16th minute. Mbappé burst in behind the defense, but Pedro Porro recovered brilliantly. Before thinking about attacking, the Spanish fullback did the dirty work, accelerating to get just enough of the ball to knock Mbappé off balance and strip away his advantage before he could test Unai Simón.

In truth, the Spanish goalkeeper was never seriously threatened. Mbappé finished with three shots, none of them on target. He was also caught offside three times as his frustration continued to build. Spain tracked him relentlessly, never allowing him to shake off the tournament’s best defense. The clearest example? He completed just one successful dribble from six attempts.

The forward who had seemed to score with almost every meaningful touch generated only 0.09 expected goals. Spain’s back line, which has been the team’s greatest strength throughout the tournament, allowed him almost nothing. The only goal Spain had conceded before the semifinal was Charles De Ketelaere’s strike for Belgium. Against a French attack loaded with talent, they silenced everyone – Mbappé above all.

He also struggled to influence the game creatively. Mbappé completed only 12 of his 16 passes and failed to connect with his lone cross. France produced six chances, none of them clear-cut, and he wasn’t directly involved in any of them. Among every outfield player who completed the full 90 minutes, his 34 touches were the fewest on the field.

Mbappé will return to Real Madrid after France’s third-place game having scored at least eight goals at the 2026 World Cup and 20 across all World Cups, leaving him just one behind Lionel Messi on the tournament’s all-time scoring list. He leaves North America having reminded everyone just how devastating he can be.

But he also leaves with another image attached to his tournament: head down, frustrated and powerless against a Spanish defense that finally found a way to stop him.

France’s players, including Mbappé and head coach Didier Deschamps, bypassed the mixed zone after the final whistle despite FIFA’s requirement to speak with the media before leaving AT&T Stadium, heading straight for the team bus. Any potential disciplinary consequences seemed secondary.

Because Spain didn’t just beat France. It broke its spirit – and Mbappé’s along with it. Until Tuesday, he had looked unstoppable.
