Monterrey take on Inter Miami and its stars for a place in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals. One of the Herons’ big names is Luis Suárez who has confessed that he nearly ended up moving to Mexico rather than Miami. The Uruguayan revealed that in 2023 several Liga MX clubs tried to sign him but he preferred to opt for MLS.

Luis Suarez explains why he chose Miami over Mexico

Luis Suárez spoke at a press conference ahead of this week’s quarter final first leg against Rayados, and without mentioning any names, he revealed that at the time he was tempted to join a Mexican side. “This year, no Mexican club wanted me, but last year they did,” the forward told reporters. “But the chance to get back together with some of my old team mates and coming to a club that won its first title last year, to be involved in making it grow, winning titles... that’s what clinched it for me and made me want to come. To enjoy a style of football that was new to me and that’s what I am doing - I’m enjoying it. The only thing missing now is to start winning things”.

Two offers from Mexico

Suárez’s name has been linked to Mexico at various times, with Cruz Azul being the club that showed the greatest interest in signing him. However, negotiations came to nothing and today, the player finds himself facing Mexican opposition for the first time in his career. Regarding this week’s match against Rayados, the former Barcelona player also praised the quality of players Fernando Ortiz has within his team - including a player he has played against several times in Spain: Sergio Canales.
