Luis Suárez will part ways with boyhood club Nacional on 31 December 2022 and will become a free agent during the winter transfer window. The Uruguay international has expressed his desire to play in Major League Soccer and almost signed with the LA Galaxy in the summer, but head coach Greg Vanney stopped the negotiations.

According to an AS source, Vanney didn’t want the Galaxy to sign the 35-year-old because the priority was to bring in a midfielder to help the team, so they went on to sign Riqui Puig instead. The Galaxy head coach thought it would be better to bring in Suárez prior to the start of the 2023 regular season to integrate him slowly into the team’s style of play.

For that reason, Suárez decided to accept the offer from Nacional, but he signed a six-month contract with an option for a further year. The former Liverpool and FC Barcelona striker’s agent visited the Galaxy’s stadium, Dignity Health Sports Park, and met with the people in charge during the summer to talk about the deal they will offer to his client.

This week, media outlets from Uruguay have confirmed that the former Ajax player will arrive at the Galaxy in January and an AS source has confirmed that Suárez has accepted the terms placed on the table by the MLS side. It is expected that the 35-year-old will arrive as a designated player because the Galaxy will not extend Douglas Costa’s stay in Los Angeles.

Another Major League Soccer team interested in signing Suárez is Inter Miami CF. The David Beckham-owned franchise sees the Uruguay international as the perfect replacement for Gonzalo Higuaín, who has confirmed that he will retire at the end of the current season.
