Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez were the stars of the show as Inter Miami defeated Nashville in MLS at Chase Park on Saturday, with the Uruguayan striker setting up the first of his former Barcelona teammate’s two goals.

How many goals has Suárez set up for Messi in his career?

The South America duo have played over 200 matches with one another, most of them during their time at Barça, where they formed one of the most dangerous attacking tridents in the history of the spot alongside Neymar. Now, after linking back up to (presumably) finish their careers in Florida, they have reached a significant milestone.

Suárez’s assist for Messi against Nashville was the 50th time he has set up a goal for the Argentina captain, more than any other player. This season, the pair have played five MLS matches together, in which they have scored nine goals between them. The ex-Liverpool forward has provided assists for two of the six goals Messi has scored in those games.

Expectation has, understandably, been high since the two teamed up once again at Inter Miami, who expect the veterans to make them more than competitive in MLS, with eyes fixed firmly on the end-of-season MLS Cup. So far, things are going fairly well, with Messi’s seven goals (and three assists) and Suárez’s six strikes (and four assists) helping The Herons to the top of the overall standings, although they have played at least one more fixture than every other team in the league.

As well as scoring a huge number of goals together at Barcelona, Messi and Suárez lifted 13 trophies in Catalonia, and they will be desperate to get their hands on more silverware in the United States.

The Argentine, of course, led Las Garzas to their first trophy in their short history in the 2023 Leagues Cup, but the big question is whether he and Suárez can take things one step further and fire the team to the MLS Cup.
