Renewal, but with fine print. Like signing to stay while knowing you might not. That is the direction the Schlotterbeck case appears to be heading, a situation that is beginning to resemble a soap opera. The ‘modern Kaiser’, as he is affectionately known, seems ready to leave the door slightly open. His new contract would include very specific clauses allowing him to depart, with defined figures and exceptions. Some of them could even apply this summer.

It is not out of the question that, if he has a strong World Cup, he could pack his bags afterwards. Dortmund’s priority is to avoid losing him for free, as his current contract runs until 2027. Beyond that, however, they are well aware of the broader situation. Real Madrid had begun to move on from the possibility of signing him, but now the defender appears to have been given an extra life, should the club decide to reconsider.

It was Schlotterbeck himself who effectively reignited the story. “I have to categorically deny that my renewal is imminent; unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point yet,” he said after the match against Ghana. “I’m aware that this situation is bad for Dortmund fans, but it’s not easy for me either,” he added. He also pointed to the change in sporting leadership as a key factor. “I negotiated with Sebastian Kehl for a long time, but he’s no longer here. Now my contact person will be Ole, along with Lars. We’ve already spoken, but nothing is imminent.”

Despite everything, the expected outcome remains the same. The feeling around Dortmund is that he will ultimately renew and that recent developments have been little more than bumps in the road. However, the figures and conditions appear to have changed. The substantial salary increase, reportedly around $20 million, is no longer guaranteed, and neither is the idea of such a long contract, potentially running until 2031.

The most significant changes concern the clauses. The specific mechanisms that would allow him to leave will be clearly written into the contract. No exact figures have emerged yet, but Real Madrid are aware that a clause could exist if they decide to make a move this summer. In that sense, this renewal would never represent a completely closed door.

Meanwhile, the centre-back situation at Real Madrid continues to evolve. One development could calm the so-called “centre-back operation”: Antonio Rüdiger’s form and physical condition are bringing him closer to a contract extension. The discomfort in his left knee has completely disappeared following a recent trip to London, where treatment eliminated the fluid that had been causing pain and inflammation. His performances support the case as well, having started nine of the eleven matches since his return.

Renewing the German defender would therefore be far from a radical decision. With him, Real Madrid would already have four centre-backs for next season: Éder Militão, Dean Huijsen, Raúl Asencio and Rüdiger himself.

Even so, the club are still looking for a fifth option. At Chamartín, the preference is to have five centre-backs in the squad. However, the urgency would be reduced compared with previous months. David Alaba will leave this summer with complete certainty, as his contract will not be renewed, and the focus is on finding a replacement for that vacancy.

Ibrahima Konaté’s name remains on the table, largely because he has still not signed a new contract. But he is not the only one being monitored. Jacobo Ramón and Nico Schlotterbeck are also still under observation, especially after the latest developments. The German defender may renew his contract, but it could come with very specific fine print.
