Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United: as it happened

Haaland's match stats

What a performance by Haaland today!

3 goals and 2 assists for the 22-year-old.

First 6-3 defeat for United since 1996

Today is only the sixth time in Manchester United history that they have lost 6-3 and the first time since they lost to Southampton away by the same scoreline in October 1996.

Guardiola: United were better in second half

City run riot

The home side led 4-0 at half-time and at that stage it was damage limitation for United. They added two more in the second half to make it 6-1 before United got two more late on. Arsenal will be looking over their shoulders. Grealish, Foden and Haaland were all superb.

Nine goals in derby

It could have been even worse for United on Sunday. Martial came off the bench to score a late brace as Guardiola emptied his own bench.

City close gap at the top

City have moved to within one point of league leaders Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

Haaland gives Foden the match ball

Haaland and Foden both netted hat-tricks for City but Haaland gives the match ball to Foden. He knows it won't be his last hat-trick in blue!

City win the derby

Manchester City have produced a sensational display to beat their neighbours with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden hat-tricks in the Manchester derby.

FT: Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United

And there's the final whistle!

City run out 6-3 winners.

City lead 6-3 with 60 seconds remaining.

Martial brace

Martial has come off the bench to score a brace.

Martial scores

It's an excellent penalty, into the top corner.

With all of City's changes, United have had a little bit of possession and a couple of efforts on goal.

Martial spins and it's a United penalty!

Antony chops onto his right foot but it's a weak effort saved by Ederson.

Martial makes it 6-2

Fred struck a left-footed shot from out on the left. Ederson pushed it into Martial's path and the Frenchman couldn't miss.

Martial nods him from close range, a consolation for United.

Erling Haaland has the same number of Premier League hat-tricks as Cristiano Ronaldo, who we won't see today. He doesn't seem to be a major part of Ten Hag's plans.

Ten Hag has just won the Manager of the Month award for September but now questions will be asked of him once again. City have been unplayable.

And if you're a Fantasy football lover, Haaland has three goals and two assists today.

Pep makes four changes

Foden nets a hat-trick

There hadn't been a hat-trick in the Manchester derby for 28 years, but we have had two today.

Guardiola has decided to make four changes at once.

City are about to make a host of changes as they lead 6-1.

Haaland slips in Foden, who drives it past De Gea from 12 yards. It's a super strike. Two of the best young players in world football have both scored hat-tricks.

FODEN makes it SIX!

Foden has a hat-trick!

Three home hat-tricks in a row for Haaland - something that has never been done before in the Premier League!

Antony drags his low left-footed shot wide.

Cristiano Ronaldo sits on the bench and is not best pleased, as you can imagine.

United change

OFF Sancho

ON Fred

Manchester City 5-1 Manchester United

Haaland hat-trick

Haaland scores his third hat-trick in a row at the Etihad!

It's only the second ever Manchester derby hat-trick.

Former United winger Andrei Kanchelskis was the last player to net a hat-trick in the derby.

It's absolutely sensational from Haaland once again.

City are lethal down the left. Gómez fires a low cross into Haaland, who gets away from his man to score a hat-trick.

14 goals in 8 games for Erling Haaland!

Silva finds a pocket of space and lays it through to Haaland on the run in the inside left channel. The big Norwegian hits the side netting.

United changes

Casemiro and Martial come on for the away side.

Antony had been poor before his goal but it was a superb strike from distance, one that will do his confidence no harm. City's intensity has naturally dropped.

Double change for United

OFF Marcus Rashford

ON Anthony Martial

OFF Scott Mctominay

ON Casemiro

Two in two for Antony

Antony gives United a glimmer of hope with his second goal in as many games.

United have one back!

The Brazilian cuts in onto his left and fires a left-footed shot past his compatriot Ederson. Could they? Surely not...

Antony scores a belter!

Casemiro and Ronaldo are warming up for United. A lot of the away section have already made the short trip home. They couldn't watch anymore.

First half possession:

City - 62%

United - 38%

Haaland's stats

Just the 16 goals for Haaland at City this season. It's quite remarkable.

Lindelof heads De Bruyne's corner from the left away.

United concede 4 again

Opta stat: Since the start of 2020-21, Man Utd have conceded 4+ first-half goals in four Premier League games (v Spurs in Oct 2020, Liverpool in Oct 2021, Brentford in Aug 2022, Man City today); this is twice as often as any other side in this time.

Ten Hag will likely have more changes in mind. We could possibly see former Real Madrid pair Casemiro and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fernandes tugs a shirt and it's a free to City.

United's half-time change

OFF Malacia

ON Shaw

I'd imagine it wasn't Pep Guardiola's toughest half-time speech ever.

If you're just joining, City lead 4-0. It's not the first time United have been trailing 4-0 this season.

City get us underway!

Luke Shaw is warming up for Manchester United.

This is all about damage limitation for United now.

Erling Haaland at Manchester City:

- 16 goals and 2 assists in 11 games (in all competitions)

- Direct involvement in a Manchester City goal every 48 minutes

- He has needed just 23 shots on target to score those 16 goals

City running riot

Erling Haaland has scored two and created one in his first ever Manchester derby.

HT: Manchester City 4-0 Manchester United

It's 4-0 in the derby.

City have been absolutely dominant. It could be even more than four!

There will be two minutes added on.

United fans are leaving the Etihad and it's not even half-time.

Could anybody see this coming?

United had won four on the trot before today. This is quite something.

50 for Foden

It's Foden's 50th goal for City.

Haaland turns to creator. He plays a low ball from the left to Foden. The England international taps it in at the far post. United are carved apart again.

Phil Foden makes if FOUR!

Grealish plays Haaland in but he loses control of it. The Norwegian is on a hat-trick after his quick first-half brace. United have been completely outclassed.

Sergio Gómez comes on

Gómez is on for City.

Varane is forced off

Lindelof replaces the injured Varane.

Both sides have made changes.

Unstoppable Haaland

KDB x Erling Haaland

It's that pair once again. United are dead and buried and it's not even half-time.

De Bruyne curls an amazing ball into the box from the right. Haaland stretches for it at the back stick to prod home with his left foot.

13 goals in 8 Premier League games.

Haaland makes it 3-0!!!

Haaland scores again

The goalscoring machine has doubled City's lead. It's all uphill for United now.

It's 12 Premier League goals in eight Premier League games for Haaland - absolutely sensational.

Haaland heads home De Bruyne's corner. It's hooked off the line by Malacia but it's over the line.

It's that man again!

De Bruyne's shot is looping onto the crossbar. De Gea gets a fingertip to it. Before that, in the same period of play, Grealish had his shot blocked by Martínez. Varane is down injured now and the United players are furious as to why Michael Oliver didn't stop the play. Varane bends his ankle in the incident.

Antony gets a rare touch. He whips it in from the right but it evades everyone and goes out of play. Casemiro has his head in his hands in the dugout.

De Bruyne drags his shot from the edge of the area wide. The Belgian playmaker is disappointed with his effort.

The 188th Manchester derby

United have won 77 of the 188 Manchester derbies.

Touches in opposition box:

City - 19

United - 4

The corner is taken short. Fernandes closes City down and the home side have a throw-in. 1-0

Cancelo reads Eriksen's pass. McTominay finally blocks the former Valencia man's cross.

City have a corner on the left.

City lead

It's 1-0 to Guardiola's side.

Malacia is booked for taking Foden down.

Both United full-backs have been booked.

City could be leading 3-0. United can't live with their movement or passing. Foden, Grealish and Silva are all causing havoc.

Foden again!

He's 14 yards out, in a central area, and he smashes it wide. It should have been 2!

Foden plays a through ball to De Bruyne in the inside right channel. The latter crosses low. United clear first time through Malacia. City's intensity has been quite impressive.

City go so close to making it 2-0. It's an excellent free by Gundogan but it remains 1-0.

Gundogan curls it up and over and it cracks the outside of the right post.

Grealish is brought down on the edge of the box by Martínez. Grealish has been very impressive thus far. City have a free-kick in a dangerous spot.

City go long to Foden. Martínez comes over to help out Malacia and United finally clear the danger.

Guardiola tells Foden and De Bruyne to press on. Malacia takes his eye off the ball and City have possession again. United need to settle down. They've been far from comfortable.

United clear Foden's cross from the left. Eriksen clears. Luke Shaw is already warming up for United.

City lead and it's fully-deserved. United have really struggled against the reigning Premier League champions.

Foden breaks the deadlock

Phil Foden has given City an early lead at the Etihad.

It's a really well-worked goal by City. Silva sends a low ball in from the left. Foden is free and shoots first time beyond De Gea. It's 1-0 to City in the derby. And it's no surprise.

FODEN gives City the lead!

Malacia gives it away cheaply. United have struggled to keep the ball early on.

Grealish looks for a one-two with Haaland but it rolls out of play and it's a goalkick for United.

It's all City but remains goalless in the derby.

United have somehow kept City out. The home side had three attempts at goal. It's brilliant defending by United to keep City out.

De Bruyne sends in a free from the left. Ake heads the free straight into De Gea's hands.

Dalot picks up a very early booking for pushing Grealish out over the touchline.

Ruben Dias is on the bench for City, while Cristiano Ronaldo starts on the bench for United

Michael Oliver is today's referee!

Manchester United are in their red shirt, black shorts and black socks today. They play from right to left.

Manchester United get us underway!

The managers take their seats in the dugouts here at the Etihad.

Haaland shakes hands with Martínez - what a battle that is going to be!

It's the Manchester derby!

We're all set in Manchester!

The players are in the tunnel and about to make their way out onto the pitch at the Etihad.

Rashford wins Player of the Month award

Marcus Rashford, United’s top goalscorer this season, has missed United’s last two games with a muscle injury but starts in attack today.

Rashford’s four goal involvements in September were enough for him to see off competition from the likes of City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to win the Player of the Month award for September.

Kickoff at the Etihad is just 15 minutes away!

Manchester City vs Manchester United: how to watch online, on TV

Before the pause to their league campaign, United had bounced back from a sorry start to the season to win four on the spin, a run that has lifted them to fifth in the table ahead of matchday nine.

In their most recent top-flight outing, on 6 September, Ten Hag’s men beat the Gunners 3-1 at Old Trafford, Marcus Rashford hitting a double to down the early-season pacesetters. Four days later, United’s euphoria was somewhat dampened by a home Europa League defeat to Real Sociedad, although they returned to winning ways just before the international break by beating Sheriff Tiraspol in Europe, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his first goal of the season.

Rodri out

City's midfield three this afternoon is Gundogan, De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

Rodri misses out with a calf problem.

Man Utd XI

Erik ten Hag has named the following eleven for his side's short trip to the Etihad.

Scott McTominay keeps his place in central midfield. Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro start on the bench for United.

Man City XI

Pep Guardiola has gone with the following side for the Manchester derby.

Erling Haaland leads the line, while Ilkay Gundogan captains the home side.

Haaland: Pep is crazy about football

Speaking to Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville ahead of the game, the former Manchester United defender asked how often Erling Haaland is surprised by how Guardiola perceives football.

"For example, the day before a game he tells us what's going to happen and then the next day, exactly that happens. It's crazy, sometimes I don't understand how it's possible, but he's crazy into football - a football-holic, if you can call it that. It's crazy.

"I'm a striker so I want to be in the box as much as possible. I don't want to go out on the side - what should I do there? We have other players doing that, so this is a logical thing."

United make short trip to Etihad

The international break may have arrived at the wrong time for United, who were finding momentum under manager Erik ten Hag.

On Friday, the Dutch coach picked up the Manager of the Month award for September.

Ten Hag has managed to steady the ship at Old Trafford after a poor start to the season, with back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Bournemouth.

“I played many derbies and I know what derbies, what they are,” Ten Hag explained in Friday’s press conference.

“With rivals, what they do with each other, I think, and I know, it’s the most important game in the Manchester area for the fans. It excites me.

“You want to be involved in these games, because it gives a good vibe, it gives so much energy. You do everything to win that game.”

Since the early season defeats, United have gone on to record four wins on the bounce and will be hoping to make it five at the Etihad on Sunday.

Manchester derby 188

The City camp

Manchester City take on Manchester United in the Manchester derby. Pep Guardiola’s side are currently second in the league, four points off leaders Arsenal.

City will be without key defender John Stones after he was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury while playing for England against Germany during the international break.

Guardiola told reporters on Friday: “He is injured. He will be back when he is ready. I don’t know when he will come back but I think maybe 10 days, two weeks.”

City eased past United in last season’s Premier League fixtures and could beat them three times in a row for the first time since 2014.

Sunday's Premier League fixtures

The Manchester derby is followed by Leeds vs Aston Villa at Elland Road.
