Manchester City vs Liverpool: as it happened

FT: Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool

It finishes 1-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland popped up with his 50th Premier League goal in the first half to give City the lead. City were on top for large parts, with Jeremy Doku exceptional on the left wing for the home side.

It wasn't until the 80th minute that Liverpool found the equaliser. Mo Salah laid it off to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who unleashed a super effort into the far bottom corner past Ederson, who had been outstanding up to that point.

It's now advantage Arsenal, who can go top of the league if they beat Brentford later today.

as.com

Klopp comes over to diffuse the situation between Guardiola and Darwin.

The two coaches now share a laugh together on the touchline.

Klopp will be the happier of the pair with the second-half equaliser.

as.com

Darwin and Guardiola have to be pulled apart at the full-time whistle!

as.com

And there's the full-time whistle!

It ends 1-1.

as.com
98

HAALAND!

His header flies wide of the far post.

as.com
97

Alisson is down holding his leg; City have a corner.

as.com
96

City are really pushing for the winning goal now, looking to carve Liverpool open from both sides.

95

Bernardo shoots! Matip blocks!

as.com
94

Doku flies past Trent once again before substitute Gakpo comes over to win back possession for Liverpool.

as.com
92

Both Guardiola and Klopp are out giving instructions as their sides look to find a late winner at the Etihad.

as.com

This is far from over! 1-1

as.com
90+

There will be EIGHT minutes added on!

as.com
88

Akanji is down after a foul by Gakpo as the two contest for the ball in the air.

as.com
87

City's corner from the right is caught on the line - right on the line - by Alisson. It's another push by Akanji on the Brazilian shot-stopper.

as.com

More Liverpool changes

Fresh legs are on.

as.com

Excellent equaliser

It's 1-1 and we're heading into the last five minutes of the 90.

as.com
83

Álvarez sends his free-kick from 25 yards into the Liverpool wall.

as.com

Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool

Trent scores the equaliser.

as.com

It's game on! What a goal it is, too.

Salah slips it to Trent, who takes a touch and buries it low past Ederson from just inside the box. It's a stunning strike.

as.com
80

GOAL!

TRENT SCORES!!!

as.com
79

HAALAND!

So close!

Doku gets to the byline and puts it into the six-yard box. It's somehow cleared.

as.com
78

It's been done all afternoon - City get it and switch it out wide to Doku to stretch the play. This time Liverpool break the home side's move down.

as.com

City lead

Can City hold on or will Liverpool get back into it?

as.com

Brentford is the only club that Haaland hasn't scored against in the Premier League.

as.com
75

No one has reached the 50-goal mark faster than Erling Haaland in the Premier League era. It has taken the City frontman just 48 games to reach his half-century - obliterating the previous record of 65 games, set by Manchester United’s Andy Cole in March 1995.

as.com

Gakpo on

Klopp makes another change as Liverpool look for that all-important equaliser.

as.com
72

Ederson comes off his line to collect Alexander-Arnold's out-swinging corner.

as.com

A win today for City would mean 24 wins in a row at home.

as.com
71

With 20 minutes remaining, City lead 1-0 at the Etihad.

as.com

Disallowed City goal

There is the confirmation of that disallowed goal.

as.com
68

DIAS SCORES!

But it's ruled out as Alisson is fouled by Akanji in the box as the corner comes in.

as.com
66

Luis Díaz's father is in the away end today. That is nice to see after the pain he and his family suffered recently with his kidnapping in Colombia.

as.com
65

Doku skins Trent near the corner flag. The cross falls to Haaland but it's kept out. 1-0

as.com
63

Doku has been outstanding. Between his speed and his quick feet - Liverpool have found him so hard to deal with. Some believed Grealish would start on the left to offer more control but Pep has made the right move.

as.com
61

Liverpool's corner on the left finds Van Dijk, who rises highest. It's a simple claim for Ederson. City lead 1-0 with 30 minutes to go at the Etihad.

as.com

One to 50

... and in no time.

as.com
58

Rodri goes for the diagonal from the centre of the pitch. Walker - in an advanced position on the right - cuts it back for Foden in the box. His effort is blocked as Liverpool defend the move well.

as.com

Liverpool changes

Double change for Liverpool.

as.com
55

Haaland!

The loose ball bounces, and it's rising as Haaland volleys it over the bar. It's a difficult one to keep down.

as.com
54

Liverpool are about to make a couple of changes.

as.com
53

Doku is so, so dangerous. The ball is switched to the winger on the left. He drives past Mac Allister before crossing for Álvarez. The former River Plate forward then sends his effort over the bar. It's a great chance for City to double their lead.

as.com
52

Liverpool win a corner on the right. Van Dijk and Matip are up for it. Ederson comes out to claim the corner. He has been excellent so far.

as.com
50

Liverpool release Salah down the right. He gets past Ake but can't get past Akanji. 1-0

as.com
47

A win for City would put them four clear of Liverpool, who currently sit in second place in the Premier League.

And in case you were wondering who scored in the first half, it was Erling Braut Haaland.

as.com
47

City have edged this one so far but only lead by a single goal. Liverpool have had a couple of chances but failed to convert.

as.com
46

Liverpool get us going for the second half!

as.com

The teams make their way out for the second half as Oasis is blasted.

as.com

Haaland breaks another record

Quicker than anyone else!

as.com

Goal number 50 for Haaland

Haaland has now scored 50 Premier League goals. It has only taken him 48 games to do it!

as.com

City lead at the break thanks to Erling Haaland's first-half strike. Foden went close to doubling City's lead before half-time but Alisson got down brilliantly to deny him.

Darwin had an earlier chance from close range saved by Ederson.

City have a narrow lead and it's set to be another fascinating 45 minutes.

as.com

And there's the whistle for half-time!

as.com
45+

There will be one minute added on.

as.com
44

FODEN!

So, so close!

Alisson gets down to his left to keep Foden's low effort out.

as.com
43

Matip wins the ball from Doku in the Liverpool box. The away side transitions brilliantly and it ends up with Darwin on the right. Dias comes in to win it and the final touch is off Darwin before it goes out for a goal-kick.

as.com
41

Darwin is flagged for offside as Salah slips him in on the break. 1-0

as.com

Haaland goal

Haaland's goal has City ahead.

as.com
38

Bernardo Silva has been everywhere - he's just so underrated, although Pep absolutely adores him.

as.com
35

Dominik Szoboszlai breaks the line and slips Darwin in, but the Uruguayan's low effort from close range hits the side netting. It's a tight angle for the Liverpool striker, who is unable to hit the target.

as.com
34

Alexander-Arnold curls a corner in from the right. Ederson flies off his line to punch clear. It's been a strong display so far from the Brazilian netminder.

as.com
32

Liverpool manage to deal with the City corner but remain camped in their own half.

as.com
31

Since Haaland's goal, it's been all City. Doku gets it once again on the left and his shot from 20 yards is deflected out for a corner on the right.

as.com

Manchester City 1-0 Liverpool

Haaland.

as.com

It's Haaland's first Premier League goal against Liverpool. City were on the front foot and their pressure has paid off.

as.com

Haaland breaks the deadlock for City!

Ake picks Haaland out inside the box. He spins, gets it onto his left and buries it past Alisson.

as.com

HAALAND!

GOAL!!!

HAALAND!!!

as.com
26

Bernardo Silva's inswinging corner from the left is headed away. City continue to threaten.

as.com
24

Klopp's side have dropped points in four of their six away Premier League games this season and their record at the Etihad has not been good.

as.com
as.com
23

City take the corner short on the left. Liverpool are wise to it, win it back and hit City on the break before Salah is brought down near the halfway line.

as.com
21

City continue to recycle it from right to left as they look to release Doku down the left. Liverpool are sitting deep in their own half. 0-0

as.com
19

City have seven wins from seven at home in all competitions this season. In fact, they have won all 23 of their home games in 2023.

as.com

What a chance that was for Liverpool but it remains goalless thanks to Ederson's acrobatics in the home goal.

as.com
16

DARWIN!

It's a super stop by Ederson to keep the Uruguayan's glancing header out.

as.com
15

City have had the best chance of the game so far (Foden) and Liverpool have failed to really threaten Guardiola's back four. Rodri and Bernardo are the two playing in front of the defence.

as.com
14

Doku cuts onto his right and curls a cross to the far post. Tsimikas is well placed and heads it clear.

as.com
11

FODEN!

Foden shoots straight at Alisson. Alisson gives it straight to the England midfielder, who can't find the corner of the net from inside the area.

It's the first attempt on goal.

as.com
8

After a 100mph start, it's slowed down a bit as the sides look to figure each other out.

as.com
6

The sun is shining on Manchester on this late November morning. The Premier League is back, although Klopp was disappointed with the time slot his team received for their trip to the Etihad.

as.com
5

Liverpool look to beat the City press but the home side are not giving the away defence an inch. 0-0

as.com
4

Foden is playing on the right for City, with Doku on the left. The latter gives Guardiola another outlet and has been terrific at times this season.

as.com

The big news is that Haaland is starting for City in attack. Only one point separates these sides. City lead at the top by a single point.

as.com

City target Alexander-Arnold right from the off.

as.com

Doku gets in behind after 30 seconds and crosses low but Liverpool manage to clear.

as.com

And we're underway!

City get us going at the Etihad.

as.com

Klopp shakes Guardiola's hand with a big grin. This is their 29th meeting.

as.com

Today's referee is Chris Kavanagh.

as.com

This one is set to be a cracker!

as.com

Here come the two teams!

as.com

The last two matches between the sides have gone in favour of City, who knocked Liverpool out of the League Cup last season and defeated them at the end of the campaign with a 4-1 win. Both clashes were played at the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool have only won on one of their nine visits to City under Klopp. City, with Pep at the helm, have won five of those meetings, scoring 23 goals and conceding 10. In the next chapter of this rivalry, Guardiola will have the opportunity to add as many wins as defeats against Klopp, and in the process, move four points ahead of him at the top of the Premier League standings.

as.com

Kick-off at the Etihad is just 10 minutes away!

as.com

Goals galore

The last 11 competitive meetings between Manchester City and Liverpool have produced 43 goals – an incredible rate of 3.9 goals per game.

Doku vs Alexander-Arnold

Pep Guardiola has gone with Jeremy Doku on the left instead of Jack Grealish. The exciting City winger will look to get at Trent Alexander-Arnold at every opportunity and that area of the pitch could be decisive today. He gives City another option down the left and has given defenders nightmares this season.

Haaland starts

If you're only joining us now, I can report that Erling Haaland will lead the line for Manchester City today. The news will ease the walk to the Etihad for City fans this morning.

How many times have Guardiola and Klopp faced each other? Who has more wins?

Manchester City’s run-ins with Liverpool rarely disappoint and today’s clash at the Etihad promises to deliver another installment of action-packed drama and the best attacking football in the Premier League - despite both clubs being handed the early afternoon kick-off slot (the game was rescheduled) immediately after an international break.

Guardiola and Klopp have met a total of 28 times - 19 of those while they have been at the helm with their present clubs. The first encounter was in Klopp’s native Germany in the 2013 DFL-Super Cup - Pep’s first official game in charge at Bayern Munich. The double-winning side he inherited from Jupp Heynckes (Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal champions) were thrashed 4-2 at Signal Iduna Park. Klopp scored his first win over the Catalan coach, and lifted his fourth trophy.

as.com

Can Salah score again?

Mo Salah is one Premier League goal away from 150. A goal today will see him move into the all-time top 10 scorers in the competition. The Egyptian forward is just two goals away from 200 overall for Liverpool.

Liverpool arrive

It's not the longest away trip for the Reds but it is an early one.

Can Manchester City be relegated because of its financial fair play problems?

On November 17, Everton were found guilty of breaching the league’s profit and sustainability rules and were handed an immediate 10-point deduction that has seen them plummet down the league table from 14th to 19th. The club teetered precariously around the relegation zone last season, surviving by just two points, but this season things look more complicated given their punishment has, as stated, come into immediate effect. Manchester City’s case is a lot more complicated and lengthy, meaning that the punishment they will receive, if any, could well be bigger than that of the Toffees.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool can challenge for the Premier League title

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes Liverpool can challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season. The Liverpool vice-captain spoke ahead of Saturday’s intriguing match against City at the Etihad Stadium.

“Last season wasn’t good enough. We brought new players in, it was about adapting as quick as possible and making sure we laid a good foundation at the start of the season,” the England international said.

“We are in a really strong position and results and form-wise we are doing enough to stay as close as possible to the top of the table.

“So far we’ve performed in a way that is how you would expect someone who can win the league to perform and if we carry this on we should be in and around it come May."

Premier League return

The Premier League is back and it doesn't get much bigger than this fixture. City went into the international break after a pulsating 4-4 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The reigning league champions currently have a one-point lead over the Reds ahead of what promises to be a fascinating affair in the early kick-off.

We'll have the team news from both camps for you very shortly.

Jurgen Klopp isn’t happy about Liverpool having another early kick-off

“[After the international break] we can train once [all together] before playing Manchester City. How can you put a game like this on Saturday at 12.30pm? Honestly, the people making these decisions, they cannot feel football, it is just not possible. These two teams could have, all together, about 30 international players.”

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool head coach

Match stats

City have won their last five home games in the league, while Liverpool have only picked up one away win in fourteen attempts against the Manchester club.

Pep Guardiola vs Jürgen Klopp: who will come out on top this weekend?

Manchester City and Liverpool meet at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday as the Premier League’s top two teams do battle. Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has won twelve of the 28 games in which his teams have faced Pep Guardiola’s teams. The German tactician is the coach Pep has faced the most times at City and is also the one who has beaten him the most times. The rivalry began in Germany until the arrival of both in the Premier League. In eight meetings between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in all competitions, there was never a draw, with each coach winning four times and losing as many.
