Manchester City vs Liverpool: as it happened
FT: Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool
It finishes 1-1 at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland popped up with his 50th Premier League goal in the first half to give City the lead. City were on top for large parts, with Jeremy Doku exceptional on the left wing for the home side.
It wasn't until the 80th minute that Liverpool found the equaliser. Mo Salah laid it off to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who unleashed a super effort into the far bottom corner past Ederson, who had been outstanding up to that point.
It's now advantage Arsenal, who can go top of the league if they beat Brentford later today.

Brentford is the only club that Haaland hasn't scored against in the Premier League.
No one has reached the 50-goal mark faster than Erling Haaland in the Premier League era. It has taken the City frontman just 48 games to reach his half-century - obliterating the previous record of 65 games, set by Manchester United’s Andy Cole in March 1995.

Doku skins Trent near the corner flag. The cross falls to Haaland but it's kept out. 1-0
Doku has been outstanding. Between his speed and his quick feet - Liverpool have found him so hard to deal with. Some believed Grealish would start on the left to offer more control but Pep has made the right move.
Liverpool's corner on the left finds Van Dijk, who rises highest. It's a simple claim for Ederson. City lead 1-0 with 30 minutes to go at the Etihad.

Liverpool are about to make a couple of changes.
Doku is so, so dangerous. The ball is switched to the winger on the left. He drives past Mac Allister before crossing for Álvarez. The former River Plate forward then sends his effort over the bar. It's a great chance for City to double their lead.
Liverpool win a corner on the right. Van Dijk and Matip are up for it. Ederson comes out to claim the corner. He has been excellent so far.
Liverpool release Salah down the right. He gets past Ake but can't get past Akanji. 1-0
A win for City would put them four clear of Liverpool, who currently sit in second place in the Premier League.
And in case you were wondering who scored in the first half, it was Erling Braut Haaland.
City have edged this one so far but only lead by a single goal. Liverpool have had a couple of chances but failed to convert.

City continue to recycle it from right to left as they look to release Doku down the left. Liverpool are sitting deep in their own half. 0-0
City have seven wins from seven at home in all competitions this season. In fact, they have won all 23 of their home games in 2023.
What a chance that was for Liverpool but it remains goalless thanks to Ederson's acrobatics in the home goal.
DARWIN!
It's a super stop by Ederson to keep the Uruguayan's glancing header out.
City have had the best chance of the game so far (Foden) and Liverpool have failed to really threaten Guardiola's back four. Rodri and Bernardo are the two playing in front of the defence.

Foden is playing on the right for City, with Doku on the left. The latter gives Guardiola another outlet and has been terrific at times this season.
The big news is that Haaland is starting for City in attack. Only one point separates these sides. City lead at the top by a single point.
City target Alexander-Arnold right from the off.
Doku gets in behind after 30 seconds and crosses low but Liverpool manage to clear.

Here come the two teams!
The last two matches between the sides have gone in favour of City, who knocked Liverpool out of the League Cup last season and defeated them at the end of the campaign with a 4-1 win. Both clashes were played at the Etihad Stadium.
Liverpool have only won on one of their nine visits to City under Klopp. City, with Pep at the helm, have won five of those meetings, scoring 23 goals and conceding 10. In the next chapter of this rivalry, Guardiola will have the opportunity to add as many wins as defeats against Klopp, and in the process, move four points ahead of him at the top of the Premier League standings.
Kick-off at the Etihad is just 10 minutes away!

Doku vs Alexander-Arnold
Pep Guardiola has gone with Jeremy Doku on the left instead of Jack Grealish. The exciting City winger will look to get at Trent Alexander-Arnold at every opportunity and that area of the pitch could be decisive today. He gives City another option down the left and has given defenders nightmares this season.

Manchester City’s run-ins with Liverpool rarely disappoint and today’s clash at the Etihad promises to deliver another installment of action-packed drama and the best attacking football in the Premier League - despite both clubs being handed the early afternoon kick-off slot (the game was rescheduled) immediately after an international break.
Guardiola and Klopp have met a total of 28 times - 19 of those while they have been at the helm with their present clubs. The first encounter was in Klopp’s native Germany in the 2013 DFL-Super Cup - Pep’s first official game in charge at Bayern Munich. The double-winning side he inherited from Jupp Heynckes (Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal champions) were thrashed 4-2 at Signal Iduna Park. Klopp scored his first win over the Catalan coach, and lifted his fourth trophy.
Can Salah score again?
Mo Salah is one Premier League goal away from 150. A goal today will see him move into the all-time top 10 scorers in the competition. The Egyptian forward is just two goals away from 200 overall for Liverpool.
Liverpool arrive
It's not the longest away trip for the Reds but it is an early one.

On November 17, Everton were found guilty of breaching the league’s profit and sustainability rules and were handed an immediate 10-point deduction that has seen them plummet down the league table from 14th to 19th. The club teetered precariously around the relegation zone last season, surviving by just two points, but this season things look more complicated given their punishment has, as stated, come into immediate effect. Manchester City’s case is a lot more complicated and lengthy, meaning that the punishment they will receive, if any, could well be bigger than that of the Toffees.

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes Liverpool can challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season. The Liverpool vice-captain spoke ahead of Saturday’s intriguing match against City at the Etihad Stadium.
“Last season wasn’t good enough. We brought new players in, it was about adapting as quick as possible and making sure we laid a good foundation at the start of the season,” the England international said.
“We are in a really strong position and results and form-wise we are doing enough to stay as close as possible to the top of the table.
“So far we’ve performed in a way that is how you would expect someone who can win the league to perform and if we carry this on we should be in and around it come May."
Premier League return
The Premier League is back and it doesn't get much bigger than this fixture. City went into the international break after a pulsating 4-4 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The reigning league champions currently have a one-point lead over the Reds ahead of what promises to be a fascinating affair in the early kick-off.
We'll have the team news from both camps for you very shortly.
Jurgen Klopp isn’t happy about Liverpool having another early kick-off
“[After the international break] we can train once [all together] before playing Manchester City. How can you put a game like this on Saturday at 12.30pm? Honestly, the people making these decisions, they cannot feel football, it is just not possible. These two teams could have, all together, about 30 international players.”
Match stats
City have won their last five home games in the league, while Liverpool have only picked up one away win in fourteen attempts against the Manchester club.

Manchester City and Liverpool meet at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday as the Premier League’s top two teams do battle. Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has won twelve of the 28 games in which his teams have faced Pep Guardiola’s teams. The German tactician is the coach Pep has faced the most times at City and is also the one who has beaten him the most times. The rivalry began in Germany until the arrival of both in the Premier League. In eight meetings between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich in all competitions, there was never a draw, with each coach winning four times and losing as many.
Erling Haaland has yet to score against Liverpool in the Premier League and the away defence will have to deal with his threat at the Etihad after the 23-year-old confirmed he will be in action for Pep Guardiola’s side.
