Manchester City vs RB Leipzig: 2022-23 Champions League Round of 16 live
Full-tiime: Manchester City 7-0 RB Leipzig
Five for Haaland, seven for City. They're back to their best!
That must surely be one of the most one-sided Champions League knockout matches in history. Leipzig had a couple of moments of danger after about half-an-hour, when Ederson was perhaps lucky to have gotten away with a challenge on Laimer outside his box, and Rodri almost gifted Werner an open goal.
Those two incidents happened in the space of around 90 seconds, and City were already 2-0 up by that stage. The hosts' movement in attack caused Leipzig all kinds of bother, with Haaland constantly getting down the side of Orbán and De Bruyne and Gundogan finding pockets of space in behind the full-backs. That said, Guardiola's side needed a dubious, VAR-assisted penaltyto hit the front, but there was no looking back from then on, with Haaland heading in a second within 60 seconds and bundling home a third from a corner.
In truth, it was all over at half-time but City weren't prepared to settle for only three goals, at least not at the start of the second period. Three goals in 12 minutes, including another two for Haaland, put the Premier League side on the verge of the biggest ever victory in the knockout stages in the current format of the Champions League. It looked as if it wouldn't come as they made a host of changes for the final 30 minutes, in which they took their foot off the gas. But De Bruyne saved the best until last, curling a beautiful strike into the corner with almost the last kick of the game, equalling 7-0 knockout wins posted by Bayern Munich (twice) and...City themselves.
But tonight was all about Haaland, who has become the fastest man to reach 30 Champions League goals.
Make sure you check back in with us tomorrow for live coverage of Real Madrid vs Liverpool, which will start at round 2.30pm ET (kick-off is at 4pm ET).
For now, I'll leave you with news on the draw for the quarter-finals, which we won't have to wait too long for once tomorrow's matches are over and done with.
Who would want to face Manchester City and Erling Haaland on today's form...?
Wednesday's Champions League ties
There final two Champions League round of 16 seconds legs will be played on Wednesday:
- Real Madrid (5) vs (2) Liverpool (4pm ET)
- Napoli (2) vs (0) Eintracht Frankfurt (4pm ET)
Anyone backing Liverpool and Eintracht to qualify?
Which teams have qualified for the 2022-23 Champions League quarter-finals?
As things stand, we now know six of the eight participants in the quarter-finals:
- Chelsea
- Manchester City
- Bayern Munich
- Inter
- Milan
- Benfica
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola: "Haaland is a serial winner"
"It was a really good performance from minute one until the end from everyone.
"We play very good with and without the ball. We scored a lot of goals. Erling was amazing but everyone was exceptional.
"Five in 60 minutes. He's an incredible guy, huge talent. Power, mentality, he's a serial winner. Really good."
On whether City misses Haaland's goals in previous seasons: "I don't think so. The reason why we concede a lot of goals we give the opponent.
Defensive lapses costly in previous years: "We scored four goals here against Real Madrid, six against Monaco, four against Tottenham. A lot of the time we were out because we conceded a lot. Right now these guys they defend really well. We had with Sergio before, this instinct to score goals."
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland: "My super strength is scoring goals"
"Firstly, I'm proud to play in this competition, I love it. Five goals! To win 7-0 is amazing."
On which of the five goals was his favourite: "I'm blurry in my head. I remember shooting but not thinking.
"I was so tired after my celebrations.
"My super strength is scoring goals. Should I be honest? A lot of goals today, I didn't think. I was just trying to get it into the back of the net. A lot of it is being quick in the mind and trying to put it where the goalkeeper is not."
City's gameplan: "We worked on the pressing yesterday, especially at home we have to run and press. We are so good at getting the ball.
"In my opinion, we should do this more.
"I think we can use this more [pressing], there is more space for the guys in between to play. Compared to last year and now we can play with a striker in behind and that's what I'm trying to bring."
On being taken off: "I told him [Pep Guardiola] I would love to score a double hat-trick but what can I do?"
Inter see off Porto in Tuesday's other tie
Inter headed to Porto to defend a slender 1-0 lead and managed to scrape a 0-0 draw in Portugal. Simone Inzaghi's side could be joined in the hat for the quarter-final draw by fellow Italians Napoli, who play tomorrow.
No pressure for Haaland
Joking about scoring goals? Haaland doesn't joke when it comes to goalscoring, Pep.

GOOOOOOAAAAAAL CITY! DE BRUYNE!
What a goal! The pick of the game!
I must say I partly posted that last message in the hope they'd prove me wrong...De Bruyne picks the ball up 25 yards out and curls a beautiful strike into the top corner! Superb!
Two minutes of added time.
City still toying with their opponents, nipping the ball away from them just when it looks as if they might intercept. They don't look like scoring again though.
City need one more goal to equal the biggest win in the knockout stages in the current Champions League format...Just saying, lads.
Raum looks to be OK to continue. If he has short-term memory loss, that might not be a bad thing for him.
A stoppage in play as Blaswich comes out for a ball into the box and wipes out his own defender, David Raum. The full-back probably wishes that had happened in the first minute.
We've seen very little of Mahrez since he came on but he wins a corner after a characteristic jinking run down the right flank. De Bruyne sticks another dangerous ball into the box but there are no takers.
A first effort on goal for City since Haaland went off. And it's a tame one from Akanji, whose header is easily stopped by Blaswich.
Klostermann on for Henrichs for the visitors.
Seconds later, Silva also finds space on the edge of the box and shoots, only to see his shot fly just wide.
Some signs of life from Leipzig...at 6-0 down.
Ederson gets away with one! Ake played the ball back to his goalkeeper but the Brazilian's clearance went straight to Olmo, whose touch was slightly too heavy, allowing Gomez to get a tackle in just in the nick of time.
Olmo floats the free-kick into the box himself but it's easily cleared away.
A RARE venture into the City half for Leipzig, who win a free-kick through good play from Olmo.
Professional players play a lot of games these days, so it's understandable that they want to take the foot off the gas a little when given the chance. That's no good to us though, we want more goals!
Leipzig changes
Dani Olmo comes on for Szoboszlai. Thanks a lot, boss.
Moments earlier, Poulsen, Silva and Simakan replaced Werner, Forsberg and Haidara for the Germans.
A chance for the likes of Mahrez, Foden and Álvarez, who haven't been playing much lately, to get some game time against opponents who have been softened right up. Not much goalmouth action since Haaland went off though.
There's definitely a big part of me that wishes that Haaland had stayed on, just to see how many goals he could've scored and what other records he could've broken. That would've kept us all entertained for the last 25 minutes.
My research tells me Haaland had 30 touches, so a few more than his 'dream'. Efficient stuff in any case.
Cargando...
Midway through the second half and I don't think Ederson has touched the ball since the break.
A minor negative for the hosts as De Bruyne goes in the book for a late challenge in midfield.
I mentioned earlier that Haaland was breaking records every week earlier in the season. Now he's back at it after a little break.
Who's the fastest player to score 30 Champions League goals? Yes, that's right.
In amongst the chaos of all the goals earlier, I may have not mentioned that Mahrez and Foden also came on for Grealish and Gundogan. Pep has used all five of his subs.
Five-goal Haaland comes off
Haaland is coming off and Leipzig are jumping for joy. Julián Álvarez replaces him.
Sergi Gomez and Phillips have also come on for City, replacing Stones and Rodri.
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAL CITY! HAALAND!
Guess who...?
Not much has happened in this second half...other than three goals! Another corner, another save from Blaswich and another follow-up by Haaland.
INCREDIBLE.
This could get worse for Leipzig! Blaswich is almost caught in possession by Haaland, who would've had an empty net to tap into if he'd managed to poke the ball away from the keeper.
GOOOOOOAAAAAAL CITY! HAALAND!
But it doesn't matter! Haaland gets his goal anyway! Silva heads a corner across goal, Haaland's header is saved by Blaswich but it falls back to the striker who lashes into the net. FOUR goals for the Norwegian!
City aren't going to stop here...Silva whips another dangerous ball into the box and it's cleared out for a corner just before Haaland can get onto it...
GOOOOOOOAAAAAAL CITY! GUNDOGAN!
Just the start Leipzig didn't want! Grealish rolls the ball into Gundogan from the left, the German faints to shoot and cuts onto his left foot and drills a lot shot into the far corner. 4-0!
Early second-half possession for City, with Leipzig pinned back inside their own half so far.
Back underway for the second half! Is there any way back for Leipzig? How many more can Haaland score?
Half-time: Manchester City 3-0 RB Leipzig
Manchester City were in complete control of that first half, bar a couple of minutes near the half-hour mark.
Leipzig have found it really difficult to stop the likes of De Bruyne and Gundogan from getting between their full-backs and centre-backs, while Haaland has got down the side of Willi Orbán on a number of occasions, which has led to the visitors' downfall. Gundogan and Haaland both had early opportunities to find the net, although City needed a dubious penalty to make the breakthrough, with Henrichs harshly punished for handball in the box.
Haaland dispatched the spot-kick and had the ball in the net again seconds later, heading in and De Bruyne's strike from the edge of the box had cannoned off the bar. It looked as if things might get ugly for the Germans after that but they had a couple of moments of hope; first, Ederson rushed from his goal to stop a Leipzig counterattack and was judged not to have fouled Laimer, when the decision could have gone either way. Then moments later, Rodri almost gifted Werner an open goal inside his own box.
But City regained their focus and finished the half in the ascendency, with Haaland bundling the ball into the net from close range to complete his hat-trick after Dias' header from a corner had been blocked by Blaswich.
A long road back for Marco Rose and his men...
Haaland ripping up the record books
This guy just keeps throwing up these mind-boggling stats. He's only 22...
Cargando...
31 Champions League goals in 25 appearances for Haaland. Not bad going, you have to admit.
GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL CITY! HAALAND HAT-TRICK!
He's baaaaack!
One of the stranger goals you'll see this week...Dias gets his head onto a corner, Blaswich does just enough to keep it out but Henrichs can only kick the ball against Haaland as he tries to clear and it nestled into the net!
De Bruyne gets away down the left this time and puts another menacing ball into the box, which Haaland can't quite get to.
Two minutes of injury time.
Haaland AGAIN gets down the side of Orban and into the box but the offside flag saves Leipzig's blushes. Phew.
City are going in for the kill before half-time. The final pass in the box just letting them down as Ake tries to join the goalscoring party.
A superb jinking run from Bernardo Silva into the Leipzig box, but the ball is whipped off his toes just before he can get a shot away. Tremendous footwork from the Portuguese.
Almost 3-0! Gundogan is the latest City midfielder to get in behind the Leipzig defence and he gets a powerful shot away, which is well pushed out by Blaswich.
We really need to see that Ederson incident again...That looked a foul to me and the Brazilian was a long way from goal. That could've been a huge moment in this game.
Seconds later, almost another opening for the Germans! City nearly the architects of their own downfall as Rodri plays a careless pass from inside his own box and Laimer almost manages to play it into Werner, who would've been all alone in front of goal.
Wow...from the City corner, Leipzig launch a blistering counter-attack and Laimer races in on goal, only to be wiped out by Ederson, who rushes from his goal to try to make a tackle! The Brazilian gets the slightest, slightest of touches on it and apparently that's not a foul.
Werner is booked for complaining.
Blaswich gets his hands to it but can only push it away for a corner. More trouble coming up.
More danger for Leipzig as De Bruyne lines up a free-kick from the left...
Haaland close again!
Haaland is right in the mood! He plays off the shoulder of the defender and is found by Grealish's neat forward pass. The striker gets plenty of power on his angled shot but Blaswich beats it away at the near post.
There was a decent sight of goal for Haidara! Raum curled a good ball into the area and the midfielder had a reasonable amount of space to get an effort away. Should've done better!
There could be a second chance for the Germans to do so here. They've got a free-kick in a good position. What can they conjure up?
What do Leipzig do now? I think they've been in the City box once so far...
GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL CITY! HAALAND!
60 seconds later (not even that) and Haaland has done it again!
The Norweigans's pressing forces Blaswich to clear hurriedly upfield. The ball is returned with interest and lands at the feet of De Bruyne, whose wicked strike comes back off the bar and perfectly onto the head of Haaland, who nods home!
GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL CITY! HAALAND!
One man was always going to take it, and he was always going to find the net! Right in the corner!
Penalty for City!
Henrich is very harshly adjugded to have handled the ball under pressure from Rodri.
The Slovenian referee has been called over by VAR for a possible handball in the box...we all know how this ends...
Much less impressive from Leipzig keeper this time as he inexplicably sticks the ball out for a corner when he was in possession...
Cue chaos in the German's box, with Akanji coming close to bundling the ball into the net!
Another chance for De Bruyne to look for Haaland in the box but this time he gets his angles all wrong and Blaswich clutches it easily.
City back on the attack and Grealish finds a little bit of space in the box. He tries to curl one towards the top corner but a deflection takes it just over. The corner comes to nothing.
Slack from Akanji in possession and Szoboszlai is almost onto it but, luckily for the City defender, the ball deflects away to teammate Dias when it could have set up a Leipzig counter.
Big chance for Haaland!
What a run from Haaland! Ake floats the ball over the top of the Leipzig defence and the striker storms past everyone and into the box, where his first-time effort is blocked by Blaswish, who came off his line well.
A neat move between Grealish and Gundogan down the left ends up with the latter trying to play a cute, slide-rule ball for the former. It almost came off...but not quite, and is cut out.
Leipzig are intent on playing the ball out from the back at all times, by the looks of things. It looks great when it comes off...let's hope for them it comes off every time...
I was singing Gvardiol's praises earlier on but he's had a shocker of a pass there which has put his team under the cosh inside their defensive third. Luckily for him, his teammates are able to bail hm out and clear the ball that comes into the box.
Another moment of panic in the Leipzig defence as De Bruyne curls a corner into the box, Stones gets his head to it and it looks goalbound but is scrambled away in front of goal.
Huge chance for Gündogan!
It's taken just two minutes for City to create a clear opening! De Bruyne gets away down the right and whips in a wicked cross to the back post for Gündogan, who's all alone but blasts over on the half volley!
An encouraging first minute of play for Leipzig, with plenty of possession...
Still 89 (plus injury time) to go though.
And we're off! Strap yourselves in!
Tuesday's other game
Porto vs Inter is the other game being played on Tuesday and kicks off at the same time.

Pep Guardiola's Champions League drought
Let's not mess about here. Manchester City hired Pep Guardiola because they wanted to win the Champions League. Just like Bayern Munich did before them. The Spaniard failed to deliver in Germany and hasn't done so in England either. Yet...
Guardiola won the competition twice with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011 and looked set to dominate the Champions League for years on end. It's not quite worked out that way. But maybe this could be the year the tide starts to turn...
Erling Haaland has scored an incredible 34 goals in 35 games in all competitions for Manchester City this season. But onlythree of those have come in the last nine matches, which has drawn criticism from some quarters.
Leipzig boss Marco Rose isn't buying it:
“If you don’t want him, send him to me! I’ll take him,” Rose said at Monday’s pre-match press conference. “Even just for the last 10 games. After that, you can have him back! I’m really surprised that he has received criticism. He’s scored 28 goals in 26 league games. If you take those goals away, I don’t know where City would be in the table".
Rose was Haaland's coach at Dortmund and the knowledge he possesses about the Norwegian's game could be the key to stopping him.
More from Rose from Andy.
City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne also spoke to the media yesterday and was asked about the threat posed by Leipzig, which he knows all about from his time playing in Germany, even though he moved to Manchester almost eight years ago.
“We know what team it is. High in energy, quality, intensity: the RB DNA. Players in the middle, aggressive. They make it a tough game.
“I played against them with Wolfsburg, pretty similar... The quality is always there. They took a step from second division to top four and Champions League. You can’t do this without quality. I’m very aware of what threats they have. Hopefully we manage that tomorrow.”
Will has more.
Winning the Champions League for the first time is now Manchester City's main priority, something which boss Pep Guardiola is well aware. He spoke about expectations at the club in his pre-match press conference on Monday.
“It doesn’t mean I agree with that, but absolutely we will be judged for this competition, definitely. In Day 1, when I first arrived here, in the Champions League, they asked me when I had only just arrived, ‘You are here to win the Champions League...’ I said, ‘What?!’ If I was the coach at Real Madrid, I could understand it, but here... I don’t know, but I accept it. It’s not going to change”.
Here's more from Andy.
RB Leipzig: 2022-23 season so far
The domestic season looked to be going so promisingly for RB Leipzig as they chase a first-ever Bundesliga crown. They were right in the thick of the title race with a struggling Bayern Munich but recent defeats to surprise challengers Union Berlin and Borussia Dortmund have seen them drop seven points off the pace, inevitably set by the Bavarians.
Still, those have been their only two league defeats since September and confidence is high within the camp, especially with a DFB-Pokal quarter-final also on the horizon.
Manchester City's superb Champions League home record!
The numbers say it all...
21 wins and two draws in 23 Champions League matches at the Etihad.
Maybe RB Leipzig should've stayed at home (pin this up on your dressing room wall if you're reading, Marco Rose).

Manchester City: 2022-23 season so far
Manchester City have been good this season but have they been great? I'd argue they have played better in previous seasons under Pep Guardiola. And, of course, this season, they are up against formidable Premier League opponents in the shape of Arsenal (we've not been able to say that for a while...).
City are currently five points adrift of the Gunners at the top of the domestic table but they have ominously dropped only two points in their last seven league matches and still have to play their title rivals at home. Would it surprise anyone if they overtook the Londoners? Possibly not...They are still in with the chance of winning an FA Cup too, so they could completely 'The Treble'.
The start of the season was, of course, dominated by Erling Haaland's ridiculous goalscoring form and although he hasn't been able to keep up that incredible pace, he continues to chip in with his fair share and will fancy his chances of going on another one of his runs before the campaign ends.
"Hey potential suitors...!"
Joško Gvardiol is undoubtedly one of Europe's most sought-after defenders after some terrific performances in the Bundesliga, in Europe and at the World Cup with Croatia. Real Madrid has been mooted as a potential destination for him, Chelsea and Liverpool too.
Plenty will be keeping a keen eye on his display against Haaland in this one.

RB Leipzig in the 2022-23 Champions League
It looked as if Real Madrid were going to completely run away with RB Leipzig's Champions League group but the Germans ultimately finished just a point behind the reigning European champions in second place. A nightmare start saw them suffer a 4-1 home humbling at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk, although they gained their revenge on matchday six, thrashing the Ukrainians 4-0 in Warsaw to seal qualification.
The highlight of the group stage, however, was a 3-2 home win over Madrid in the penultimate match, which proved crucial in their battle to finish second.
Manchester City in the 2022-23 Champions League
Manchester City qualified for the knockout rounds with the minimum of fuss, winning Group H by five points from second-placed Borussia Dortmund. They won four of their six matches, their only dropped points coming in goalless draws in Copenhagen and Germany.
Erling Haaland scored five goals in his first three Champions League games for City but hasn't found the net in the competition since a 5-0 thrashing of the Danes on 5 October. He must due one (or maybe two or three)...

So, what happened in the first leg between RB Leipzig and Manchester City?
Well, things were looking pretty rosy for City at half-time. Pep Guardiola’s men had dominated the first half and looked to be on course to secure an impressive victory after Riyad Mahrez had put them in front just before the half-hour mark. But the Germans battled back superbly in the second period and came away with what ultimately proved to be a deserved draw thanks to Joško Gvardial’s leveller.

Hello and welcome to Manchester City vs RB Leipzig!
The Champiooooooons! Manchester City have had a fairly unhappy relationship with the Champions League over the years but they have the chance on Tuesday to make it to at least the quarter-finals for a sixth successive season. Standing in their way, however, who reached the last four in 2020 and will be hoping to cause an upset at Etihad Stadium. The tie is in the balance after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Germany.
Thanks for joining me (Roddy) for this one, I'm expecting goals (sorry for jinxing it straight off the bat...).
