Manchester City win the 2021/22 Premier League
Manchester City became 2021/22 Premier League champions on the final day of the season with a dramatic comeback win over Aston Villa.
Manchester City are Premier League champions after coming from two goals down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on Sunday. Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho gave Steven Gerrard’s Villa a two-goal lead at the Etihad as City failed to break down the away side.
Pep Guardiola was forced into making changes as his side looked for a way back. Substitute Ilkay Gundogan came on to grab a brace either side of a Rodri strike and in five minutes City had three goals and were on their way to the title.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City were the favourites to lift this year’s Premier League title back in August. Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side eventually fell away as the league progressed with arguably the two best sides in the world left in a two-horse race for England’s most coveted domestic trophy.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have turned their clubs into formidable forces and in most other seasons Liverpool’s 92 points would have seen them lift the trophy at the end of the season. Despite City’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, they were able to return to league action and record emphatic wins over Newcastle and Wolves to keep them in the driving seat as we entered the final day of the season.
Liverpool have been fighting on all fronts in their quest for a quadruple this season. With the number of games played in such quick succession, Klopp has been forced into rotating his team and the risk paid off with a crucial 2-1 away victory over Southampton last Tuesday which kept the Merseysiders breathing down City’s neck right until the very end.
In 2019/20, Klopp lifted his first Premier League title with Liverpool, their only title since the Premier League began in 1992. Guardiola’s City have been the dominant side in the league in recent years. City had won three titles in the last four years before today. Their first Premier League title came in 2011/12, as Sergio Agüero scored an unforgettable 94th minute winner against QPR to snatch the title from Manchester United’s hands. On Sunday, Guardiola lifted his fourth Premier League title in five years with City.
We entered the final day with just one point separating the two sides. Guardiola’s City had 90 points from 37 games played and Klopp’s team had picked up 89 points. Two truly remarkable teams, who have entertained fans across the world with their different styles of football this season. After a fascinating league campaign, Liverpool will now be fully focused on next Saturday’s Champions League final against Real Madrid in Paris.
