Manchester United drawn against Real Betis in the pick of the Europa League round of 16 ties
The Red Devils defeated Barcelona in the European League playoff round and will face Spanish opposition again in the round of 16.
After defeating Barcelona in the Europa League playoff round on Thursday, Premier League giants Manchester United will face Spanish opposition for a third time in the competition this season after being paired with Seville outfit Real Betis in the round of 16. The Red Devils previously played against Real Sociedad in the group stages, with both teams winning 1-0 away from home.
The men from San Sebastian ended up topping that group, which means they were able to avoid taking part in the playoff round. They went straight into the hat for the round of 16, where they have been drawn to face José Mourinho’s Roma.
The other LaLiga representatives left in the competition are Betis’ city rivals and record winners Sevilla, who dropped down from the Champions League and overcame a scare to see off PSV in the playoff round. The Andalusians will play against Turkish club Fenerbache in the last 16.
Premier League leaders Arsenal travel to Lisbon in Europa League
As for the other Premier League side left in the competition, league leaders Arsenal will travel to Lisbon to take on Sporting CP in the first leg of their tie, with the Portuguese side having already played in North London in the Champions League this season.
And in a quirk of the draw, there will be a Union derby for the second time in the competition this season; German side Union Berlin and Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise were first out of the hat and already played against each other in the group stages. Once again, both sides recorded a 1-0 victory away from home.
