Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has all charges dropped
Police have announced that criminal proceedings against the 21-year-old have been stopped.
Greater Manchester Police have announced today that all charges against Mason Greenwood: attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault, have been dropped. He was due to face trial in November.
The Crown Prosecution Service said there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation from the police investigation.
Greenwood still listed as a Manchester United player
All of the allegations came to light in January 2022 when a woman posted online about the abuse, which is said to have happened in the months leading up to the accusation. Greenwood played for Manchester United against West Ham on January 22 last year and was arrested a week later. He has not played for over a year, despite still being listed as a player on the Official Manchester United Club website.
The club released a statement shortly after the news was released: “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps”.
Police confirm the player ‘no longer faces criminal proceedings’
Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, GMP’s Head of Public Protection, said: “Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only fair that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who had been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this.”
The court was told that Greenwood was also charged with monitoring the complainant’s social media accounts and “making threats and derogatory comments towards her, amounting to a serious effect upon her.”
Kerr continued: “I would, however, like to use this opportunity to reiterate GMP’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, throughout what can be a hard and upsetting time for them. An ever-increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training and the force is more consistently utilising tools, available via the criminal justice system, to keep people safe and care for victims. If you feel you are or might be a victim, please don’t let this case put you off asking for help.”
