The German veteran is back from injury, but his costly errors and lack of sharpness cast a shadow over Bayern’s biggest game of the season.

Manuel Neuer concerns before Real Madrid welcome Bayern to Bernabéu
Manuel Neuer returned to action after a month on the sidelines, and his performance could hardly have been more troubling. Although he opened with a stunning save that evoked his prime, he later made decisive errors in both goals conceded by Bayern. He stood rooted for the first and mishandled his positioning with a poor rush for the second. Bayern’s three late goals softened the impact of his shaky comeback, but concerns ahead of the trip to the Bernabéu remain very real.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper has endured a year marked by physical setbacks, compounded by injuries to his backups that created a serious issue for the team. Now, he appears to have regained fitness just in time for the decisive stretch of the campaign. Even so, he is far from his best level. A lack of match rhythm showed clearly in the goals conceded, where his reactions seemed dulled and his movements sluggish.
Still, his resilience and determination to remain at the top level deserve recognition. Despite major injuries – including the broken tibia he suffered while skiing in late 2022 – he has fought back to extend his career and cement his legacy as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history at a club as demanding as Bayern.
On the other hand, Neuer once again proved vital with his feet. His ability to build from the back could be crucial against Arbeloa’s side. In his return against Freiburg, he completed 36 of 48 passes and recorded 50% accuracy on long balls, connecting on 11 of 22 attempts.

Neuer and his history at the Bernabéu
Neuer, the fifth-most capped player in Champions League history, is set to return to a stage he knows well – Real Madrid’s iconic stadium in Chamartín. It is a ground where he has experienced both triumph and frustration, and perhaps this could be his final visit. What is certain is that he must significantly improve on Saturday’s performance to contain the attacking firepower of Vinícius, Kylian Mbappé, Federico Valverde and company.
In total, the veteran goalkeeper has played at the Bernabéu four times, all in knockout rounds. His first visit came in 2012, when he starred in a penalty shootout that sent Bayern to the semifinals – his finest moment in Madrid. He returned in 2014 and lost 1–0 in the first leg of the semifinals; in 2017, Madrid prevailed in extra time to advance; and in 2024, Carlo Ancelotti’s side reached the final after a 2–1 win over Bayern. Neuer missed the 2018 tie due to a left foot injury, with Sven Ulreich stepping in.
His contract expires on June 30, and his future remains uncertain. Whether he chooses to extend his career for another year, stay in Munich, or seek a move outside European soccer before retiring is still unclear. His last renewal came in February of last year for one additional season, but this time the decision appears likely to come down to the wire.
