Manuel Neuer: skin cancer, surgery and World Cup glory
The Bayern Munich and German national team goalkeeper has revealed to Bild that he needed to have three operations to beat cancer.
On Wednesday it was reported that Manuel Neuer was forced to undergo surgery on three occasions to treat skin cancer.
Neuer beats skin cancer
The goalkeeper, who has won pretty much every meaningful trophy that he has competed for in the game, revealed the news to German outlet Bild. The 36-year old was diagnosed with skin cancer on his face and he is now working alongside German tennis star Angelique Kerber to promote sun cream.
Neuer has won multiple titles with Bayern Munich and also lifted the 2014 World Cup with his nation. He is also targeting more glory with the national team starting this month in Qatar, although Germany are far from favourites.
Neuer changed everything
Over the years we have seen the role and contribution of the last line of defence evolving and Real Madrid’s Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois points to the German as the driving force behind that.
“It was with Neuer that there was the biggest change. What he did at the 2014 World Cup had a huge impact on what came next. The goalkeeper was no longer just the guy who had to stop the ball.”
