At 24-years-old, Marcelo Weigandt has secured a spot in Tata Martino’s starting XI for Inter Miami, with strong performances on the right flank impressing the coach. With their playoff spot already secured, a significant improvement from last season, Inter Miami now aim to continue accumulating points to keep their dream alive of winning the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the most points at the end of the competition.

Currently leading the Eastern Conference with 56 points from 26 matches—17 wins, five draws, and just four losses—this season has been a standout for Inter Miami. Despite frequent absences of their captain, Leo Messi, due to national team duties with Argentina or injury, the team has managed to adapt. When Messi isn’t available, Luis Suárez steps up to lead the attack, showcasing the depth of Martino’s squad.

Inter Miami ‘feels like a family’

Weigandt, affectionately known as El Chelo, has played in 23 games this season across the MLS, Leagues Cup, and CONCACAF Champions Cup. He has demonstrated solid offensive and defensive skills, which have caught Tata Martino’s eye. Speaking about their upcoming match against Chicago Fire, he told the media, “We approach every game with the same seriousness, effort, and rhythm. We are a group that hates to lose, and we will give everything and work at full capacity.”

Discussing the MLS format, Weigandt admitted, “Sometimes I get a little dizzy with the format, but it’s a fantastic competition. I’m very happy to be here and enjoy it every day,” he shared with the press, where AS USA was present.

“I feel very fortunate to be part of this wonderful club. We have an incredible group, which is the most important thing because it feels like a family. We live together every day, and our strong bond makes everything easier. On the field, we communicate well and understand each other’s movements intuitively. Whether playing with a backline of four or five, I feel very comfortable. Tata explains everything very well during the week. He is a great coach, and we must respect his decisions and adapt to what he asks of us,” he concluded, praising Gerardo Martino for his leadership.

Regarding Lionel Messi, Weigandt said, “He is training hard. Having him on the team is incredible—everyone would want Messi on their side. It’s extraordinary, and we need to stay calm. When he is there, everything is incredible.”

Weigandt also expressed his commitment to the team: “Wherever I can contribute my part, I will always do it for the benefit of the group. We are doing very well, and we hope to keep it that way,” he added. Finally, he shared his thoughts on the level of competition in MLS: “It is a very competitive league with a high intensity on the field. The passion is palpable, and I truly enjoy being part of it,” he concluded.
