Marco Asensio has changed agent and joined Gestifute, the agency owned by super-agent Jorge Mendes. With a contract at Madrid expiring in 2023, it is time to make a decision, as letting the winger leave on a free is not in Real Madrid’s plans. AS understands it was a move agreed with Horacio Gaggioli, his former agent. Both parties feel that this move is the best for the Spaniard and for his career.

This newspaper understands that Asensio would also be happy to stay at Real Madrid. In February, we reported that Real Madrid had contacted Asensio’s entourage with a view to a meeting at the end of the season. The idea was to discuss a contract renewal, before the 26-year-old’s contract entered its final phase. Changing agents means that he is preparing for his next move.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Rúben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota and João Cancelo are just some of the most recognisable faces who are represented by Jorge Mendes.

While his numbers are good (he has scored 11 goals this season), Asensio has become less important for Carlo Ancelotti, as Rodrygo and Fede Valverde have gained prominence. Rodrygo has come up with some big goals of late, scoring against Chelsea to send the game to extra time, and against Sevilla in the top of the table clash.

In Wednesday’s win over Osasuna, Asensio was on target, but Rodrygo was excellent on the left, making two penalties that Karim Benzema was unable to convert. Valverde has performed on big nights and is a strong option for Ancelotti on the right flank.

The possible arrival of Mbappé

With lots of competition for places and the possible arrival of Kylian Mbappé from PSG in the summer, it could be the right time for Asensio to move on.

“Ancelotti was the one who stopped him from leaving. Madrid were willing to let him leave for his own good,” said Gaggioli when he was still his agent last September. Ancelotti wasn’t lying, he has played 37 games, totalling 1,819 minutes.

AC Milan are reportedly interested in the 26-year-old, who won’t be short of suitors.
