Manchester United football Mason Greenwood has appeared in court after being charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault.

As reported by The Athletic, the 21-year-old, wearing a grey hooded Nike jumper and grey jogging bottoms and flanked by two dock officers, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

On Monday, members of Greenwood’s family sat in a full public gallery in the small courtroom, along with members of the press.

The attempted rape is said to have happened in October 2021, the assault in December 2021, and the controlling and coercive behaviour between November 2018 and October this year. All three charges relate to the same woman.

Greenwood had been on bail until Saturday, when he allegedly breached his bail conditions and prosecutors decided to charge him.

Suspended by Manchester United

The player, who has represented England at senior international level, has remained suspended by Manchester United since the allegations came to light but he is still receiving a £75,000 a week salary.

His profile was never removed from the official United website, although he is not currently a member of the squad while the legal process is ongoing. Nike has terminated its sponsorship deal with Greenwood, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its FIFA 22 game.

An official United statement in June said: “Manchester United reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind. As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice.”
