‘Maza’ Rodríguez and Aquivaldo visit América prior to second leg
The champions of the 2013 Clausura took time to visit the current playing squad of the América team with eyes on the prize.
The Águilas of América had a stumble in the first leg of the quarterfinals, as they lost 2-1 against the Red Devils of Toluca. Now, the they will seek to turn the tie around in order to reach the grand final of the Apertura 2022.
América past and present
Prior to the return game against the Mexiquenses, former players Aquivaldo Mosquera and Javier el ‘Maza’ Rodríguez took time to visit the current group for added encouragement. The stars of the Clausura 2013 title win were present at the team’s training, and were alongside players including Miguel Layún.
It is worth mentioning that both players remain extremely popular with the América fans, since they were a fundamental part of the 2013 championship win against Cruz Azul. The former player of the Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara has identified himself with the blue-cream colors.
After losing by a score of 2-1 in the first leg, those under the command of Fernando Ortiz know that a single goal scored in the second game, without conceding, is enough to advance. In the event that the Mexicans do score, the citizens of the capital will need at least two.
The last time América managed to qualify for the final of the Mexican competition soccer final was in the 2019 Apertura, when they played for the championship against the Rayados of Monterrey. On that occasion, the team led by Miguel Herrera lost on penalties.
