Club América vs Toluca: match preview

Going into Wednesday’s opening leg, América were on a 14-game unbeaten run in the Apertura 2022 tournament, having last suffered defeat at the start of August, all the way back on matchday four of the regular season. What’s more, Fernando Ortiz’s men had thumped Puebla in the quarter-finals, putting 11 goals past La Franja across the two legs.

However, the playoffs’ top seeds were surprised by Toluca - who finished sixth in the regular season - as goals by Haret Huerta and Leo Fernández gave Los Diablos Rojos a 2-1 victory at the Estadio Nemesio Díez.

Emilio Lara’s late strike for América does make their task wholly more manageable, though: a one-goal win will be enough to take Las Águilas into the final, by virtue of their higher regular-season finish.

The winners of the tie will face either Monterrey or Pachuca in the trophy decider. Pachuca lead 5-2 after Thursday’s first leg at the Estadio Hidalgo.
