Mazatlán owner warns of the cost of relegation in the Liga MX
Ricardo Salinas Pliego warned that there is no security guaranteed for businessmen who invest in Mexican soccer.
Ricardo Salinas Pliego, owner of Mazatlán and director of Grupo Salinas, has spoken out about the perils of teams who are relegated in Mexican soccer and what that means for businesses that invest in Liga MX clubs. Salinas highlighted that there is little economic certainty and no safety net for the clubs who drop down a division and suffer financial losses as a consequence.
Salinas, the third wealthiest man in Mexico, gave his opinion on what he thinks needs to change to improve the Liga MX through a series of posts on his Twitter account - the discussion quickly went viral. Just a few days ago, Alejandro Irarragori made very similar comments during a Grupo Orlegi press conference.
Abolish relegation in the Liga MX
“Ultimately eliminate relegation and “fines”, so that team owners can invest with confidence in the future of their clubs, with a long-term vision in the training of players and without the latent threat of losing their investments,” Salinas Pliego argued.
Several posters rejected his proposal while others argued that the spirit of the competition would be lost. In addition, they advocated measures to help the Liga Expansion teams that have been trying to gain promotion for the past few seasons but have been unable to go up a division due to the rules which the Liga MX implemented in recent years.
Mazatlán are currently bottom of the Liga MX table on one point and without a win in seven games. If they are unable to turn their situation around, the Sinaloa-based side will be at serious risk of being relegated.
