Dorival Júnior’s tenure as Brazil coach has come to an end. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) met late on Friday and dismissed the coach.

An announcement is expected to follow from CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues and at present a series of names have been linked with the position including those of Jorge Jesús with Abel Ferreira as the second option.

Argentina’s 4-1 thrashing of Brazil was the final straw for the CBF president who hasn’t been shy in changing coaches during his three years in office, as he did with Fernando Diniz after the defeat against Argentina at the Maracaná.

Dorival Júnior, it’s felt has failed to make a major impact in the 16 matches he managed and only managed a victory against one of CONMEBOL’s big teams with a 2-1 win over Colombia, a week ago.

Earlier this week after the defeat in Buenos Aires, Real Madrid striker Vinicius Jr. called for a ‘total reset’ at international level.

Fifth coach in three years

Since Ednaldo Rodrigues took over as president of the CBF, the Canarinha have had four coaches in three years: Tite (2022), Ramón Menezes (2023), Fernando Diniz (2023-2024) and Dorival Júnior (2024-2025).

With the potential appointment of a new coach, Brazil would add its fifth manager in a three-year period. As things stand, there is little or no danger of the Brazilian side not qualifying for the 2026 World Cup given that the top six of a ten team CONMEBOL group advance, but playing as they are, the Seleçao will not intimidate opponents with hope that a new manager can bring back the magic and quell an ever demanding national team fanbase.
