Mbappé due to receive a loyalty bonus from PSG worth €80 million
On July 31, PSG will owe Mbappé one half of his €80 million loyalty bonus, which will slash the price of his potential transfer.
The dimensions that exist around the Mbappé deal are potentially endless, but on the horizon of this one, fast-approaching, is a key date in the operation. On July 31, the French striker will be owed the first half of his loyalty bonus that PSG have written into the contract, something which would have the effect of drastically dropping his potential value in a transfer.
Curiously, that is the same day that his unilateral renewal clause for 2025 expires, the one that the player has famously refused to exercise, so say PSG. Mbappé, therefore, is set to be paid €40 million ($45 million) into his account. That is why the club wish to have the situation resolved when the date arrives. If he does not renew, they will sell him, or that is the message Qatar are putting out, the country that is seemingly changing its mind about the player on a daily basis.
When does Mbappé go back to PSG training?
Mbappé will stop earning €60 million per year if he does not renew with PSG. In the contract signed with Nasser Al Khelaïfi at the Parc de Princes, the extension was not for three years, as advertised, but for two, with the extra year being a unilateral decision from the player himself. One of the clauses was a bonus of €60 million, as well as two loyalty bonuses: €70 million in year one and €80 million in year two.
If Mbappé makes it to July 31 as a PSG player, the most likely outcome as things stand, he will earn €40 million. The communication strategy from the World Cup winner has been clear and firm: he will play at PSG for the final year of his current deal. This way he does not reject the loyalty bonus and PSG have no power of negotiation in the event that they choose to sell him.
We are entering into an important moment, but not a definitive one; there is nothing clear at all about how things are going to turn out. On Monday 17 July, Mbappé will return to training with the rest of his teammates, and he will meet Luis Enrique for the first time. If, by then, nothing has changed, he will travel to Japan with the rest of the squad to compete in the pre-season tour.
PSG want to resolve the issue as soon as possible
Currently, the star is taking refuge in Le Thor, a village of just 8,000 people close to Avignon, where he can calmly enjoy the final days of his holiday. He has trained on his own and even left the other day to meet fans who were waiting to catch a glimpse of the player. He will soon be back in training, without kicking up a fuss, and that complicates things for PSG, who want to sort things out as soon as possible.
The French team have marked next week as the definitive time where the situation needs to be resolved, as they know they are about to spend €40 million of their Financial Fair Play wiggle room: Mbappé is in control. Nobody knows right now how he would react if PSG were to strike a deal with Real Madrid.
What is clear is that he will not reject one cent of the loyalty bonus that is coming his way. It is €80 million dollars and those close to the player want him to fulfil this side of the deal, especially Fayza Lamari, his mother, who has a say in every decision made by her son. Next week, in Paris, she will meet the top brass of PSG and tell them once again that her son is not renewing his deal. Nobody knows where this tale will end.
