Mbappé for Salah: the Liverpool dream switch at Anfield
According to reports in France, the Reds are keeping an eye on the PSG striker, whose contract expires in 2024.
The latest saga surrounding Kylian Mbappé's future does not seem to be urgent at first glance, despite Real Madrid’s unwillingness to wait until the summer, when his contract expires, as they did in 2022. Reports in France suggest that the decision regarding his renewal or departure from Paris Saint-Germain will be known long before the season’s end. As of Monday 1 January, as was the case two years ago, the French national team captain is free to negotiate with any team, leading to widespread rumours about his future. This speculation persists despite the complete silence maintained by the player and his circle.
Mbappé free to negotiate
It appears that the prolonged race to get Mbappé's signature will be primarily contested between Real Madrid and PSG. However, current Premier League leaders Liverpool should not be ruled out as a potential destination for the Bondy star. According to Le Parisien, the Reds are a serious option for Mbappé, especially considering the likely departure of Salah to Saudi Arabia in the summer. There is a dream at Anfield of seeing the striker play in England, one that nearly came true in 2017 after Klopp personally spoke with Mbappé and attempted to persuade him.
PSG more confident, but cautious
The Champions League, in which PSG remains involved and will face Real Sociedad in February and March in the round of 16, could play a crucial, albeit not decisive, role in Mbappé's decision. Following a turbulent summer, where he was initially dismissed after sending a letter indicating he would not renew his contract until 2025, the relationship between both parties has since improved. As such, optimism has grown in the French capital as the months have passed, albeit cautiously.
A big ask for Liverpool
Liverpool are aware of the difficulty in convincing Mbappé, especially given the persistence of his other suitors, and the financial package that would likely be demanded. Nevertheless, some are saying that they are prepared to seize any opportunity, no matter how slim, to join the bidding war for his signature. Others argue that there are other areas to focus on in the squad build.
For now, the forward is calm, not rushing any decisions, enjoying life in Paris, and preparing for the Trophée des Champions, the French Super Cup. This event will see PSG face Toulouse on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET at Parc des Princes.
