Update:

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has undergone an operation on a tooth which could see him miss out on his side’s Copa del Rey semi-final game against Real Sociedad on Wednesday.

The Frenchman played without issue in Madrid’s home win against Girona in LaLiga, but manager Carlo Ancelotti revealed on Tuesday that he had taken ill with an issue relating to his teeth.

“He’ll travel”, explained Ancelotti to a sea of relieved faces, “and everyone who travels has a chance of playing”.

Mbappé puts ghosts of past to bed

Mbappé‘s early season struggles are well behind him now, it seems. After missing two penalties - against Athletic Club and Liverpool - and “hitting rock bottom”, the forward has found form at Real Madrid and become one of, if not the, main attacking threat in the side.

He has scored 17 goals in LaLiga and 7 in the Champions League, and sits only behind Robert Lewandowski in the domestic standings for finding the back of the net.

Carlo Ancelotti also explained in his pre-game press conference that Fede Valverde and Thibaut Courtois will also miss out on the game in San Sebastián, although there are no injury concerns with either. The two players will in fact sit the game out due to load management, with the manager keen on spreading the minutes out around the squad and giving those who have played the most a rest.

Given the timely return of Lucas Vázquez, the Real Madrid coach and his staff have decided to rest the Uruguayan after he has filled in at right-back in a number of important games so far during the campaign.
