On Sunday, Megan Rapinoe will play her final game for the United States women’s national team (USWNT), bringing the curtain down on a trophy-laden, 17-year international career.

The setting for Rapinoe’s USWNT swan song will be the legendary Soldier Field in Chicago, where the Stars and Stripes face South Africa in the second instalment of a double header of September friendlies.

Since her debut against the Republic of Ireland in July 2006, the 38-year-old has always been ready to run through walls for the USWNT. She has established herself as a true Team USA great, despite the difficult moments she has also endured during her time in the team.

One of the USWNT’s Women’s World Cup greats

Rapinoe is among a select group of US internationals who have appeared at four or more Women’s World Cups: she was in the squad for the tournament in Germany in 2011, in Canada in 2015, in France in 2019 and in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

Rapinoe also went to one Under-20 Women’s World Cup and featured at three Summer Olympic Games.

Rapinoe’s USWNT stats

With 202 USWNT caps currently to her name, Rapinoe will make her 203rd appearance for the four-time World Cup winners this weekend.

In her 202 international games so far, the forward has scored 63 times and supplied 73 assists. Nine of her goals for the USWNT came at the Women’s World Cup, while five were scored at the Olympics.

During her successful USWNT career, Rapinoe helped her country to glory at two World Cups, lifting back-to-back global titles in 2015 and 2019. She was on target in the Americans’ 2-0 final win over the Netherlands four years ago, netting from the spot before Rose Lavelle added a second.

This year’s last-16 exit to Sweden, in which Rapinoe missed a penalty in a shootout defeat, deprived the US of the chance to become the first nation to secure three straight World Cup triumphs

At the Olympics, meanwhile, she was a gold-medal winner at London 2012 and was in the team that took bronze in Tokyo in 2021.

Rapinoe’s individual awards

The winner of the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot at the 2019 World Cup, Rapinoe’s key role in the USWNT’s fourth global crown led her to be overwhelmingly recognised as the planet’s stand-out player that year.

She picked up FIFA’s The Best Women’s Player award ahead of England’s Lucy Bronze in September 2019, and three months later won the Women’s Ballon d’Or, beating international team-mate Alex Morgan into second in the voting.
