We’re now just hours away from kicking off and concluding the series of three matches between Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara, which have captivated the entire Mexican fanbase for the past 10 days. These encounters tilted the scales in favour of Club América in the CONCACAF Champions League, but at least in the Liga MX, they provide another opportunity for Fernando Gago’s team to seek redemption and assert their dominance at home.

How often have Chivas won at the Akron Stadium?

Beyond mere standings and title contention, a significant factor worth highlighting weighs heavily on the minds of Chivas’ fans. Since the inauguration of the Estadio Akron, they have only celebrated three victories by their team at home.

Club América’s invincibility in Zapopan was further underscored by the resounding 3-0 victory during the first leg of the round of 16 in the CONCACAF Champions League, administered by André Jardine’s disciples over the Rebaño at their own turf. This result extends Chivas’ streak of consecutive winless matches in Jalisco to five, as they have failed to assert their home advantage against their arch-rivals since 25 November 2020.

Prior to the aforementioned date, three years had elapsed since the last occasion when Guadalajara managed to defeat the reigning champions of Mexican football on their home turf. On that distant 18 February 2017, under the guidance of Matias Almeyda, they secured a narrow 1-0 victory.

Furthermore, the inaugural triumph for Chivas at their new stadium occurred on 10 April 2011, when they delivered an unforgettable 3-0 thrashing to an América side still grappling with adversity. In that year, amidst hopeful expectations, Chivas provided glimpses of what fans hoped would be the first of many joys in Zapopan when facing their arch-rivals in the so-called ‘Clásico Nacional’.

In addition to the four draws that have occurred between these two teams at the Estadio Akron, the dominance of Club América as the visiting side is unmistakable. Therefore, if there’s anything that could alleviate Chivas’ current struggles in the Clausura 2024, along with their elimination from the confederational tournament, it would be to make a strong statement and convincingly defeat Club América on Saturday.
